Brussels Livestock report 274 heifers on offer avg. $8 to $92, reach $100 The sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending Nov. 14 were: fed cattle, 767; cows, 340; veal and bob calves, 565; lambs, 122; stockers, 3,744. The fed steers and heifers sold at prices $1 higher. Cows sold on a steady market. Veal sold on a strong active trade with lambs selling steady. All classes of stockers sold on a steady market. There were 451 steers on offer selling from $88 to $92 to the high of $101.50. Twenty-four steers consigned by Kada Farms, Bluevale, averaging 1,395 lbs. sold for an average of $93.59 with sales to $101.50. Fifty steers consigned by Cunningham Farms, Lucan, averaging 1,436 lbs. sold for an average of $88.58 with sales to $96.75. Twelve steers consigned by Schmidt Brook Farms Inc., Woodstock, averaging 1,467 lbs. sold for an average of $87.55 with It was gold rush time at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair on Nov. 7 when 24 4-H members and their coaches competed for the provincial 4-H Go For the Gold Championship. 4-H members representing the county/districts/regions of Rainy River, Leeds, Victoria, Wellington, Huron and Oxford all competed and won at local and regional competitions before advancing to the provincial finals. When the final question had been answered and scores totalled Victoria County emerged as the 1998 Champions. Team members were Chad Burley, Cheryl Hazenberg, Matt Ormiston and Sharon Robertson and Coach Bob Burley. The Reserve Champions were Huron County. Team members were Robyn Etherington, Derek Maloney, James McNaughton and Laurie Rodges and Coach Florence Pullen. 4-H is a program designed for the personal development of youth in Ontario. The 4-H Go For the Gold competition tests members' know- sales to $95.25. Twenty-four steers consigned by Martin Metske, Lucknow, averaging 1,423 lbs. sold for an average of $86.68 with sales to $93.50. Sixteen steers consigned by Murray Shiell, Wingham, averaging 1,388 lbs. sold for an average of $87.44 with sales to $92.60. Fourteen steers consigned by Jim Howatt, Londesboro, averaging 1,398 lbs. sold for an average of $91.14 with sales to $92. Seven steers consigned by Bill Patton, Dundalk, averaging 1,386 lbs. sold for an average of $88.87 with sales to $91.75. Eleven steers consigned by Lorne Benedict, Kerwood, averaging 1,275 lbs. sold for an average of $89.24 with sales to $91.50. Twelve steers consigned by Alton O'Neil, Lucan, averaging ledge and skills in different 4-H project areas ranging from crops, livestock and machinery to lifeskills, recreation, food and leisure as well as general knowledge about the 4-H program, the community and current events. The Go For the Gold competition, now in its 17th year, is made possible through the generous sponsorship of the following organizations: Ontario Cattlemen's Association, Ontario Corn Producer's Association, Ontario Egg Producer's Marketing Board, Ontario Goat Breeder's Association, Ontario Pork, Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association, Ontario Turkey Producer's Marketing Board, Shur- Gain and the Student Federation of the Ontario Agricultural College. In kind, assistance was provided by Ontario Farm Animal Council, Farm Credit Corporation, Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency, Beef Information Centre, Growmark, Murray Gaunt, Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Ontario 4-H Council and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs. 1,479 lbs. sold for an average of $87.69 with sales to $90.75. There were 340 cows on offer selling: D1 and D2 cows, $48 to $52 to the high of $67.50; D3, $45 to $48; D4, $35 to $45. Two Holstein cows consigned by Joe Louwagie, Mitchell, averaging 1,450 lbs. sold for an average of $55.90 with sales to $63.50. One charolais bull consigned by Vern Ashley, Elmwood, weighing 2,015 lbs. sold for $62. One Holstein bull consigned by Williams Bros. Farms, Woodstock, weighing 1,890 lbs. sold for $54.50. There were 231 veal on offer selling from: Beef, $90 to $133; Holstein, $90 to $110; Plain Holstein, $70 to $90. Two veal consigned by David Horst, Gowanstown, averaging 770 lbs. sold for an average of $122.97 with sales to $124.
