Citizen staff
With the retirement of long-time
Brussels vet George Alexander, a
well-established and multi-doctor
operation has assumed his duties.
Veterinarians John and Kathy
Hunt, Terry Johnston and Petra
Suidgeest of Newry Veterinary Ser-
vices, took over the business in
July, but will be hosting their open
house this Saturday.
Dr. Johnston, along with wife,
Theresa, opened the Newry clinic
in 1977. He had graduated from the
University of Guelph in 1974 and
worked in Seaforth before moving
to Newry.
Even with great distances and the
passage of time, one former Brus-
sels woman found that miracles do
happen.
Now of Goderich, Carmen Klaus
said she has learned to pay atten-
tion to the little, everyday miracles
in her life so she can experience the
"heavenly guidance" of coinci-
dence.
Having grown up in Quebec dur-
ing the Depression, Klaus was sep-
arated from her brothers and sisters
when all were put up for adoption.
Klaus was able to keep in touch
with a few, but one of the many
coincidences in her life enabled her
to contact another.
Calling her brother in Quebec,
she dialed the wrong number. Upon
asking for him, the woman said he
didn't live there but she was his sis-
ter. Klaus was speaking to a sibling
she had lost contact with 35 years
before. Plans were soon made for a
reunion.
Her most recent miracle occurred
when a daughter Klaus had given
up for adoption many years ago
came knocking.
The story began two years ago
when a man called saying the
young woman was looking for
Klaus. Permission was given for
the release of information and
Klaus was reunited with her daugh-
ter, Nadine, in Quebec, this past
summer.
While visiting, it was discovered
that the parents of Nadine's friend
had gone to school with Klaus.
That long-time connection allowed
Klaus to track down another broth-
er whom she hadn't seen in 12
years.
When she met her brother, she
learned that he had a daughter
named Chloe, born July 12. Nadine
was born on the same date and her
daughter's name is Chloe.
With her amazing string of coin-
Twp. covers pool
West Wawanosh council
approved the purchase of a pool
safety cover, at a cost of $8,025,
including taxes and labour. The
cost will be split among four
municipalities. The quoted price
from Rintoul's Pools and Spas was
accepted at the Nov. 3 session.
A bylaw was passed to allow the
temporary closure of certain roads
as was a bylaw setting the salaries
and honorarium for 1998.
Council agreed with the town of
Walkerton in their request for the
provincial government to share the
gasoline tax with municipalities.
Road and general accounts
totalling $15,362.24 and
$48,272.39, were approved for pay-
ment.
Dr. John Hunt joined the busi-
ness in 1981 and became a partner
five years later. Dr. Kathy Hunt
worked in the clinic for many
years, but has been involved with
raising her family for the last
seven. She is now returning to vet-
erinary medicine as the small ani-
mal specialist for Brussels. Both
Hunts are Guelph graduates.
Dr. Petra Suidgeest joined the
practice in 1998 after graduating
from the Atlantic Veterinary Col-
lege. She moved to Ontario so she
could work more with dairy cattle.
Suidgeest will continue to work
mainly from the Newry office, but
will be in Brussels when Kathy
Hunt is not available.
cidences, Klaus said "Extraordinary
things happen everyday to every-
body. Life is worth living just to
see what happens next."
John Hunt and Johnston general-
ly work in the large animal prac-
tice, dealing with beef, dairy and
equine, particularly with reproduc-
tive medicine.
Johnston said much of the work
is preventative. They also have an
ultra-sound for both cattle and
horses for reproductive health mon-
itoring.
Though appointments are
required for small animals, Kathy
Hunt said there will always be a vet
available to clients.
Of interest for pet owners, Hunt
said behavioural medicine is a large
part of what she does. It is particu-
larly important for purebreds.
Also employed by the two clinics
is Stacey Boyd-Burgers in Brussels
and Cindy Haverkamp and Helen
Hubbert in Newry.
The Brussels clinic will be open
Monday through Friday from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. while Newry is open
Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Newry Brussels Veterinary Ser-
vices offers 24-houfservice with a
1-800 number.
Welcoming clients
While Dr. Kathy Hunt checks a pup, Drs. Petra Suidgeest,
left, Terry Johnston, centre, and John Hunt watch the
proceedings.
