THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18. 1998. Mustangs take tourney ports By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff The Madill Mustangs Boys hock- ey team rode away with a tourna- ment championship last week. The squad competed Thursday and Friday in the Early Bird York Invitational at York University. Their first game on Thursday morning was against the Hockey Training Institute, a private school in Shelburne with an emphasis on hockey. They shellacked them 5-0. Sean Lougheed in goal earned the shutout. The next game, against Elmira, ended knotted 0-0. Coach Larry Lane said, "This is the first time my team has been shutout in four years." Despite outplaying and out- shooting their opponents 36-12, Elmira's goalie made some great saves to end this in a tie. Doing a solid job in the Madill net was Tom Collins. Friday morning the team suffered its first loss against the Chippewa team from North Bay. "Again we outshot them, but just couldn't beat the goalie," said Lane. The final score was 3-1. The defeat put them in third place and onto the semi-finals. Coming up against Kincardine, the Madill squad dominated the play, said Lane. "On one power play, they had, the Kincardine team could hardly get the puck out of their end." The shutout in this 5-0 effort was earned by Adam Cameron. Now in the finals, the Mustangs returned to face their tournament nemesis. This time, Chippewa was on the losing side with Madillnail- ipg a solid 5-1 victory and the tour- nament title. While the Madill team has been in the finals a few times, the cham- pionship win is a first, said Lane. "I guess you could say that I am now cautiously optimistic about this group." Lightning strikes competition On Oct. 30, the Saugeen Mait- land Lightning PeeWee BB team of women's provincial hockey met the Bantam B Starfires in Sarnia. Though the hosts jumped out to at early lead, Michelle Cook of Blyth, assisted by Brittany Camp- bell of Bluevale jammed in a sec- ond period goal to tie it 1-1. After Sarnia regained the lead, Carleigh Weiler of Formosa broke through the Starfires defence to knot the game once again. On Sunday, Nov. 1, the Light- ning met the Seaforth Stars away. The hosts struck at the 30 second mark, but consistent netminding by Lightning's Brook Wheeler of Brussels helped to hold them through the second period. Katie Whytock of Teeswater assisted Jackie Zacher of Walker- ton on the tieing point — a short- handed marker early in the third period. With just five minutes remaining Heather Walker of Durham fed the puck to Weiler, who slid it into the corner of the net for the go-ahead goal. The Lightning battled to kill a late-period penalty and come away with a victory. In a game in Kincardine on Oct. 24, the Lightning PeeWees played to a 3-3 tie.Scoring was Captian Brittany Kellington of Brussels, Zacher and Weiler. The Lightning hockey team travelled to Stouffville on the Nov. 7 - 8 weekend. In game one, the girls met with Kitchener and played to a scoreless tie with Wheeler earning the shutout for the Lightning. Whytock opened the scoring against Stouffville in game two with assists to Campbell and Jessica Mann of Lucknow. Late in the second period Kellington added to the lead, aided by Candice Robertson of Harriston and Walker. Berfelz kept the door closed in net for Saugeen Maitland. The Lightning found themselves down early in game three against Mississauga. Midway through the second, on passes from Campbell and Robertson, Weiler found the net to tie the game. Walker walked in unassisted to put the girls ahead 20 seconds later and knocked the wind out of the Mississauga sails. With six seconds remaining in the game Walker scored on an open net for the 3-1 win and a spot in the championship game the next day against Oshawa. Oshawa opened the game strong and were on the board early in the first. Weiler pounced on the rebound from a slapshot by Zacher and knot the game at one each. Just ten seconds later Oshawa jumped back into the lead and sealed the Lightning's fate with a late goal to end the period 3-1. After a scoreless second period, Oshawa added one more at the start of the third period. A nice passing play by Walker and Weiler allowed Campbell to drive one home but proved too little too late and finished the tourney with silver. Experience was the key in the game and it's early in the season. This was a well earned Silver against some seasoned teams, said coaches. The Lightning hosted Seaforth at Howick Community Centre on Nov. 14. Looking low in voltage the Lightning ended the first down by one goal. Goalie, Berfelz came up big to keep the girls in there, early in the second period. Rachel Elliott of Brussels was positioned nicely at the corner of the net to tie on a pass from Walker. A fast skating Seaforth edged back into the lead but the The Blyth Bulldog Midgets hockey team split a pair of weekend games. On Friday night the team travelled to Walkerton and came home with a 5-3 loss. Blyth fell behind 3-0 in the first period, but scored three unanswered goals in a six-minute span in the second period to tie it at three. Walkerton scored twice in the third frame to clinch the victory. Joel Arthur scored twice for Blyth and Jon Kochis added another. Assists went to Adam Anderson, two and Tyler Stewart. On Saturday night Blyth was on Lighting would strike again by Walker from Weiler to send them into the third period tied. The recharged Saugeen Maitland moved into the lead-early when Weiler and Zacher hooked up. Goals by Cook and Campbell from Kellington and Zacher rounded out the 5-2 win. Next day action had London Devilettes visiting the Lightning. The girls controlled the first period and were rewarded late when Campbell broke through the defense on a pass from Nicki McGlynn of Teeswater and put it high to the top corner. Second and third periods were scoreless and Wheeler saved the Lightning's bacon when she got the pad out on what looked like a sure goal by London to win the shut out. Strong defensive play by Bridget Sheddon and Mann along with pesky fore-checking of Whytock helped keep London at bay. The Lightning remain undefeated in regular league play so far this season. the road again to Mitchell. The home team scored in the first minute of the game with Blyth scoring in the second to deadlock it at one. The score remained the same until Kyle Anderson scored for Blyth with 41 seconds remaining in the game. Arthur added an empty net goal to secure a 3-1 victory. Chris Carter scored Blyth's first goal with Joel Kellington adding three assists and Darryl Postma two. Dean Wilson had a solid game in the Blyth net. Midgets split a pair The Brussels Atoms Reps tri- umphed over Mitchell AE on Nov. 14. Travelling to Mitchell, the team played a solid three periods, helped by solid goaltending from Kyle Gibson to take this 4-2 contest. Scoring were Adam Corbett, Darcey Cook, with two and Chris Corbett. Assists went to Matt White, Josh Albrechtas with two, Christopher Jutzi, Tate Stephenson and Cory Chapman. Coaches said there was a deter- mined effort from every player.
