PAGE 23. By Janice Becker Citizen staff It is an hilarious production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. ...And Perhaps a Play Artistic Director Erin Roulston said that is the best way to describe the upcom- ing performances by a company of area teens. Beginning several months ago, the group of about 35 youths began working on the all-teen concept, to put together a production which was totally theirs. The result is The Complete Works. This play is for those who love Shakespeare or hate Shakespeare, she said. Written by an American, it jokes around with all parts of Shakespearian plays and even if not versed in the words of the bard, Roulston said the jokes are still funny. Though many of the actors and crews have been involved in theatre in some way in the past, Roulston said many have not and this is the longest production for all of them. The play runs a full two hours. It has been a learning experience for all involved she said as the teens have had to find new ways to handle disputes with friends. "We learned not to start a busi- ness with people you like. Normal things that happen can make you extremely mad at your friends. " On the positive side, Roulston said they are also gaining a lot of experience in theatre. "It is incredibly rewarding. It is really kinda cool. With all our dreams, we are doing it because of us. It is a good feeling. " Roulston said the company has allowed them to meet people they would otherwise not have had the opportunity to consider as friends. "These are incredible life lessons." To get the play up and running, the teens spent months fundraising with coffee houses, raking lawns, selling chocolate bars and acquiring ads for the house program. Dona- tions from businesses also aided in the effort. Roulston said there is a lot riding on this production as there are also investors. "We hope to half fill the house each night." Aside from the financial aspects, the company hopes to put together two more shows through the winter season. The winter play, I'll be Back Before Midnight, which pre- miered at the Blyth Festival in 1978, is set to open in late Febru- ary. A spring production has not yet . been selected. She said the Festival Theatre staff has been extremely helpful, offering advice, support and the use of their facilities. Local high school drama teachers have also offered support. Under the direction of Cappucine Onn and the technical direction of Robin Sanders, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare takes to the stage in The Garage Nov. 16. Due to the teen cast, the show does not run every night. It will be staged Nov. 18, 20, 21 and 26 at 7 p.m.; Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. with student matinees on Nov. 24 for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 for teens and $10 for adults. Patrons are warned there is some language and mature content. Friday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. at the Wingham Town Hall Heritage Theatre The Barra MacNeils will be stopping in Wingham. The Barra MacNeils have been making music all their lives, but not until recently has this family group from Sydney Mines, NS truly made its mark in the public eye. The group which takes its name from the Scottish Isle of Barra, has always been steeped in the Celtic tradition. Yet as I found on their brand new compilation album Until Now, their traditional songs are flavoured with touches of both jazz and world beat that freshen the Celtic sound. The four siblings, Stewart, Sheumas, Kyle and Lucy MacNeil, released their first album in 1986, followed by Rock in the Stream in 1989 and in 1992 Timeframe was released and won album of the year at the 1992 East Coast Music Awards. They have won four other ECMA's since then including best Pop/Rock Act in 1996. Their song Darling Be Home Soon was a top 10 hit across the country and the album Closer to Paradise was certified gold within months of its release. / E ntertainment Teens have fun with Shakespeare The Barra MacNeils appear in Wingham `G.
