Born 97 years ago, May 30, 1901, he was the son of the late John and Ellen (Newcombe) Wal- lace of Morris Twp. His beloved wife, the former Dorothy Howard predeceased him in 1981. Throughout his adult life, Mr. Wallace had been employed as a 0 bituaries miller, storekeeper and town clerk. He was a member of Blyth United Church and of the Loyal Orange Lodge. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Shirley Rutledge of Blyth, Irma and Bill Wallace of Clinton, Bev and Helen Wallace of Londesboro and his daughter-in- law June Wallace of Goderich. He was a dear grandfather to 13 and great-grandfather to 22. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Wallace was predeceased by a By Victoria Jackson Clinton News-Record Staff Massage therapy is used to decrease muscle tension and pain, as well as to relieve stress and prevent injuries. Most towns in Huron county have at least one massage therapist working there right now, according to Tanya Hallam, who has started her own massage therapy business in Londesboro. Hallam, who was born in Clinton, said she started the business in September after graduating in June. "I wanted to work as part of the health care team and help to relieve people's pain," she said. Hallam added that to become a massage therapist one has to complete 2,200 hours of training or a two-year course. At the end of the training, therapists must pass a written and oral exam. Therapists are regulated under the Health Professions Act, the same legislation governing doctors, nurses, midwives and others. She works in Goderich at Montage, located in Suncoast Mall, as well as at her own home business. "There's a big demand for massage especially in this area," Hallam said. "Most of the registered massage therapists (RMT) have full client lists." Hallam, who was raised in Clinton, said massage therapists try to help manage and alleviate pain and increase joint range of motion. She added that by participating in regular massage treatments people can help prevent major injuries during the work day. Although massage is not covered by OHIP, many health care plans have some form of coverage. "A lot of people don't realize it, but massage is included in some benefit packages. Some people have to have prescriptions," Hallam said. A one-hour session at Hallam's home costs $50 and $30 for a half hour. Her clientele list is made up of a lot of middle-aged people and is about half male and half female. "Generally, men come for lower back pain and women come for repetitive work injuries," Hallam said. She added that massage helps by releasing endorphins, which block pain signals going to your brain from the injury. "To understand this concept, you can just compare it to your own response when you are hurt. For instance, if you bang your elbow, your immediate reaction is to rub it, which physiologically changes the message that reaches your breain,' Hallam said. She said that some of the more common injuries or muscu- loskeletal conditions treated by massage therapy are muscle tension, carpal tunnel syndrome in the hand and 'thoracic outlet syndrome in the arm. "Some things can be treated with hands on therapy and remedial exercises," Hallam said. She said therapists can help spot trigger points, which are very irritable spots usually located within "a taut band of skeletal muscle." "A lot of headaches are caused by trigger points in different neck muscles and can be treated by what is called trigger point therapy," Hallam said. She added that massage is also used to help heal injuries such as tendonitis, which develops from repetitive work, as well as ligament sprains or muscle strains caused by accidents. "Massage reduces inflammation from injuries by increasing circulation, which removes waste products and brings nutrition to injured cells," Hallam said. She added that a technique called friction therapy can limit scars from forming or reduce scar tissue Moving up Two young men joined the Brussels Scouts this year.
