Huron Fed. of Ag. members reflect safety
By Lisa Boonstoppel-Pot
Special to The Citizen
In three years, every Huron
County Federation of Agriculture
member is going to reflect safety,
thanks to a new $8,000 'Safety
Tape' campaign.
The goal of the safety tape
project is for every HCFA member
to receive the super-reflective
safety-tape kits, to stick on their
tractors so that motorists can see
the machines when travelling the
roadways at night.
"In 1993, 344 farm and
construction vehicles were
involved in traffic collision, 13 of
which were fatal," HCFA Finance
Committee Chair Charles Regele
told members at the federation's
annual meeting held in
Holmesville, Oct. 23. "The 3M
reflective tape we are working with
is a new tape which is six times
brighter than conventional sheeting
and has a candle power of 900.
This provides better visual
information ,for faster, more
accurate decision making by
drivers."
Regele stresses that reflective
tape isn't designed to replace
flashing lights or slow moving
signs. However, with the constant
shaking of field work, lights
sometimes shake loose or bulbs
break. "Reflective tape is an
affordable alternative," he said.
Reflective tape packages have
been on the market for some time.
The 3M company sells three
reflective tape packages: tractor,
overwidth and tow, ranging in price
from $10 to $30. The ones to be
given to HCFA members cost half
that amount because HCFA board
members will be making the kits
themselves. The board will buy the
reflective tape in bulk (South
Easthope Mutual Insurance is
selling it to the federation at cost),
cut and package it with
instructions.
"We're hoping that if we give it
out at half price, there will be a lot
more use of it," said Regele.
Board members will be
distributing the packages on farm
visits. Every member will receive
one tractor kit free. Additional kits
will cost $5.50. Overwidth kits will
be sold at cost for $10 and tow kits
will be $11.50.
Distribution will begin in the
southern townships this fall and
winter. HCFA members in the
central townships should receive
their packages next winter while
delivery to the northern townships
is planned for the years 2000 and
2001.
Farmers who feel they need their
kitg- earlier can call the HCFA
office.
The HCFA set aside $8,000 in its
1999 budget to cover the cost of the
three-year program.
Regele is hoping the safety tape
program will catch on with other
federations. "We want to put the
protocol out there and let other
counties copy it," says Regele. "We
hope the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture will take it on too."
According to 'The Canadian
Coalition for Agricultural Safety
and Rural Health', a minimum of
two reflectors or red reflective tape
is recommended. One should be
positioned as close as is practical to
the left extremity and the other as
close as possible to the right
extremity of the equipment, visible
to the rear. On long equipment,
amber reflective#tape should be
spaced no more than five metres
(16.4 feet) apart on both sides.
Each strip of tape should measure
no less than two by nine inches.
The coalition says that superior
grade reflective tape is more
durable and less susceptible to
damage than reflective lenses in
lamp fixtures.
