Brussels Tykes down Elma-Logan 5-2 A strong second period allowed Brussels PeeWees to sail past the visiting Mitchell hockey squad Oct. 27. Mitchell got off the mark first when Jamie Stephen put one over the line at 12:13 of the first. Mid-way through the second, Brussels came alive with Jonathon Engel bulging the twine at 9:59. Brandon Blake and Kyle Stephen- son assisted. Brussels quickly took the lead less than two minutes later when Blake beat the goalie with assis- tance from Sean Hoegy. Hoegy set up the third Brussels netter at 2:15, allowing Joel Hem- ingway to score. Taking a 3-1 lead as the period closed out, Rob McClure, assisted by Evan Horst, added to the tally. Hemingway popped his second of the contest at 10:58 of the third, before Mitchell's Dan Reis got one by the netminder. Jason Verhoeve The Blyth Midget Bulldogs opened their season on the road Oct. 26 in Lucknow. Blyth's Matt McLellan scored nine minutes into the game on an assist from Darrell McDougall to give Blyth a 1-0 lead. Blyth added another marker midway through the second period as Dave Ansley scored with help from Joel Kellington and Tyler Stewart. Lucknow scored early in the third frame but Blyth restored a two-goal lead with six minutes to play on Ansley's second goal. Assists went to Kellington and Bryce Toll. Lucknow scored with one second left to make the final score 3-2 for Blyth. Goaltender Dean Wilson played solid in the Blyth net. assisted. The following day, Brussels trav- elled to Zurich where they traded the lead with their opponent throughout the game. Hoegy racked up an unassisted point at 5:12 of the opening frame before Zurich tied it up at 2:39. Campbell retook the lead for the squad when he slipped one past the goalie on a solo effort just 25 sec- onds later. Zurich again evened the score at 8:15 of the second and went ahead for the first time half a minute later. Brussels scored their third with only 1:42 remaining. Blake assisted by Hoegy, earned the netter. Brussels edged in front in the third when Robbie Semple passed to Scott Armstrong for the score at 11:18. Up 4-3, the visitors never looked back, popping two more in the peri- od to capture the 6-3 win. Third period goals were scored by Campbell and Blake. Blyth travelled to Clinton the following night. The Bulldogs scored twice in the first period and added a single in the second to lead 3-0 after two. The teams traded two goals in the third period to give Blyth a 5-2 win. Goal scorers fior Blyth were Joel Arthur, Nathan Shannon, McLellan, Derek Cook and Darryl Postma. Assists went to Arthur, two, McLellan, two, Kellington, cook and Jon Kochis. Remaining players on the Bulldog roster are Chris Carter, Adam Anderson, Kyle Anderson, Graham Worsell and Steve Oldfield. The coaching staff includes John Stewart, Wayne McDougall and Barney Stewart. Trainers are Ian McLellan and Rod Ansley. On Saturday, Brussels Tykes hosted Elma-Logan. The visitors opened the scoring midway through the period jumping on a rebound. Joel Wilkinson scored an unassisted goal a minute later to even the score. Early in the second period Ben Gowing took a pass from Thomas Johnson and scored to give On Oct. 26 the Blyth Bantam Bulldogs celebrated their home opener with a 9-2 win over•- Mitchell. Craig Marks led the scoring with three goals and one assist. Jeremy Austin had two goals and one assist. Other goal scorers were Scott Austin, Matt Bromley, Michael Bernard and Jeff Carter. Assists went to Matt Anderson, Justin Rinn and Rob Archambault. Travis Campbell had a fine first appearance in net. On Halloween night the team It was a romp for the visiting Blyth PeeWee Reps when they challenged Mitchell, Oct. 31. Micah Loder lit up the score- board first, netting the puck at 10:57 of the first. Andy Toll and Trevor Koehler assisted. Loder increased the lead to two in the second off a pass from Cole Stewart before Mitchell got on the board. A power play goal by Mike Bean put Blyth up 3-1 at the end of the middle frame. Five goals by Blyth in the third were more than Mitchell could han- dle as they were only able to slip two past the netminder. Third period points went to Toll, Kirk Stewart, Loder for the hat- trick, Steven Van Amersfoort and Drive carefully Brussels a 2-1 lead. As in their last game Brussels gained confidence as the game progressed and created several scoring chances. Early in the third period Cody Subject scored with Robert Cronin drawing an assist. A minute later Evan Ducharme jumped on a rebound to up the score to 4 - 1. Assists went to Taylor Prior and Thomas Johnson. A41 errant clearing pass by a - - travelled to Clinton with a few extra spooks, and had another successful game winning 14-1. Martin Sturzenegger led the scoring with a hattrick. The boys were playing well and Ryan Lee kept the net warm for the game. Nov. 1 the team travelled to Hensall for a late evening game. The first period was end-to-end hockey with each team trading goal for goal. The boys capitalized on Hensall penalties and were able to hold them off playing a man short and at one point two men short. They had Taylor Hesselwood on a power play. Assists were earned by T.J. Marks (two), Hesselwood, Ryan McClinchey, C. Stewart, K. Stew- art and Toll (two). Blyth took home an 8-3 win. Brussels defenseman went on the stick of an Elma-Logan player, who quickly put it in the Brussels goal to cut the lead to 4-2. With six minutes left Ben Gowing scored his second of the game for the 5-2 finish. Assists went to Joel Wilkinson and Herb Runstedler. This victory evened the Tykes' record at one win and one loss. This Saturday the Tykes travel to Blyth for a 10 a.m. game. a comfortable lead at the end of the second 6-2. The final score was 8-3 for Blyth. Trainer Brent Scrimgeour said he was impressed by the boys' ability to play as a team with no "hot doggin".
