From the Minister's Study Minister says, 'Enjoy the blessings' By Lynn Nichol Knox Cranbrook This time of year many churches in the area have special anniversary celebrations. People come from all over the place, .back to congregations with which they have past connections. The celebrations include special services, guest speakers, special music and food, among other things. The fellowship over the lunch is a time of sharing memories and stories of the life of the congregation. People recall, and sometimes are reunited with, their former Sunday School teachers, ministers, neighbours and friends. You hear the stories of the time the mouse ran across the minister's feet while he was preaching, the time the organ quit right in the middle of a hymn, the time the bat came to Sunday School, the time when a beloved elder was being buried and the sun came out_just at the right moment to remind everyone of God's presence and grace. Where I came from, we didn't Organizers of the Ten•Thousand Villages International Crafts Sale held the weekend after Thanksgiving at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship were thrilled to achieve their best sale ever. By 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, the last day of the sale, the cash register had gone over the $10,000 mark, which is a new record. Chairperson Pat Pietrek said, "When sales totalled $4,200 in just four hours on Thursday evening, we knew we would be driving to the warehouse at New Hamburg the next morning to replenish our stock so customers on Friday and Saturday would also have an excellent choice of crafts for sale." Almost I ,000'persons attended the sale, some having come from London and Owen Sound, although the-majorit;/ were from Wingham, Goderich, Bayfield, Exeter and Clinton plus visitors from British Columbia and Florida. The largest item sold was a table size drum from Kenya. Many people are surprised to learn that there are 45 permanent Ten Thousand Villages, stores in Canada which are open year round. Anyone can call the head office at New Hamburg, 519-662-1879, for more information. Blyth UCW hears of faith Blyth UCW held its regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 20 with 20 present. Dianne Ferguson conducted devotions and welcomed everyone. The theme was Thanksgiving and Isolation. Susan Howson at the piano accompanied the singing of a hymn. Several poems on Thanksgiving were read. Mrs. Howson then introduced Debbie Clarance, Dungannon, who gave a very powerful message on faith. Every successful church has to have faith, she said. "Faith is being sure what we hope for but cannot see." Bonnie Shannon conducted the Continued on page 24 have anniversary celebrations that I can recall. Or at least not on a yearly basis. Maybe it was because many of the Presbyterian churches out west are much "younger" than around here, and they didn't feel it was appropriate to celebrate an eighth or a 15th anniversary. Somehow, 90 or 133 or 140 years seems like more of an accomplishment. But if it were up to me, it's a tradition I would encourage everywhere. Now that I have been a part of congregational anniversary celebrations, it would seem like there was something important missing to not have them. These celebrations are not just an excuse for a party, a chance to get together and talk with old friends, or a means to fill the church and achieve a substantial offering. They are much more. We come together to rejoice in God's faithfulness and kindness over many years. It's an opportunity to remember our history and reflect on the fact that the Christian faith is larger than just "We were a tired, but happy group of volunteers on Saturday afternoon," said Pietrek, "as we packed up the unsold items to be returned to the warehouse at New Hamburg." "We are pleased that so many people are wanting to support Third World artisans by purchasing their products. The money from our consignment sale will allow MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) to support four Third world families for one year. This makes all our us. When we encounter difficulties and feel alone, we can remember that we are indebted to contributions from so many others who also have struggled through the years. When we need some inspiration, it helps to remember ; the strength and commitment of our forbearers. And when we're not sure of where God is guiding us, or what is going to happen to us, a look at the past reminds us that God works in many different ways, and in all different times — and gives us hope for the future. Our past and our future are in God's hands. For so many to come together to celebrate what God has done is a sign of hope for the future. An anniversary celebration is like a birthday party, or a wedding anniversary, or a family reunion. It's not just a group of people who happen to be in the same place. It's a family thing. When we come together to worship, to tell stories, and to share food and memories, it reminds us that in Christ, we are family. Brothers and sisters who work worthwhile." Pietrek gives credit to the media — radio, newspapers, cable TV — as well as word-of-mouth for the heavy attendance at the sale. The youth group at Brussels Mennonite also had a successful week with sales from baked goods and the Saturday lunch reaching $570. Brussels Mennonite is already making plans for next year's sale — same place, same time — the week after Thanksgiving. won't forget or desert each other, just as God doesn't forget or desert us. The anniversary brings in the extended family, but the closest group meets every week. For those of you who are part of a congregation that celebrates anniversaries, enjoy the blessings of the occasion. For those who are not, if you also need a sense of security in a God who is faithful to all generations, if you are looking for a place to belong, the church family is never an exclusive one - you are invited and welcome to join in the party. Craft sale exceeds $10,000
