The Citizen, 1998-10-28, Page 3Council takes action on crime By Janice Becker Citizen staff It is a case of "nipping it in the bud" before the situation gets worse. Those were the words from Blyth's representative to the com- munity policing committee, Kathy Bromley when she and OPP Offi- cer Del Mercey spoke to Blyth councillors, Oct. 20, about a mobile watch unit. After an increase in incidents, both break and enters and vandal- ism in the community over the past summer, Bromley said a communi- ty watch program could help stop the number of occurrences from increasing. In his presentation to council Mercey said the mobile watch is run by a group of volunteers who patrol the village, in pairs, by vehi- cle, numerous nights during the month. The patrols could be run as often as volunteers like and are usually on the street for four hours begin- ning at 11 p.m. Volunteers would be equipped with a cellular phone to contact police when they have witnessed suspicious behaviour or an illegal act. Participants do not react, but simply observe, record, and inform. They would also be asked to appear in court if necessary, though Mercey said this rarely happens when there are eyewitnesses. When going out on patrol, the OPP communication centre is informed so patrolling officers know there is someone out. In other communities where mobile watches are already in place, Mercey said the number of incidents involving locals dropped because they knew about the patrols "It is an extra set of eyes for the police," he said. There would be minimal cost to set up a watch with only a cell phone and log book required. Mer- cey said teh community policing committee may look into getting backing from Bell Canada for the phone service. Council gave their full support to the program, also suggesting it be co-ordinated through Bromley. ,T+ 1„S eis .:43, Christmas is fast 1#0 ; #•'1 approaching, and we're 4 ready to serve our Christmas Dinner Buffets .„,•• 4 • 3. s Phone 523-9381 it' $9 e • s to make reservations tbe Myth 1 • # "S,W :5 4i Sunday, Dec. 13 j Sunday, Dec. 20 and other times upon A I s request, for small ‘4 s groups or staff parties Come in today for best selection Unique, Personal, Thoughtful, Useful Unique, Personal, Thoughtful, Useful mo ue , P e r s o n a l, T h o u . ht fu l, U s e fu n a s n 'I n 3 . n o ' e u o si a 'a n bi u AT BLYTHE BROOKE ORCHARDS You'll find an excellent selection of Apples • McIntosh • Cortland • Spartan • Gala • Empire • Ida Red • Russet plus pumpkins, squash, carrots, potatoes & other in-season produce SAVE MONEY ON TOP QUALITY PRODUCE WHEN YOU BUY DIRECT FROM THE FARM For delivery or special orders call 523-4383 -1 mile west of Blyth on County Rd.#25 Blyth People Brownies hike frig; ler S at our 1(Peekenai Wed. - Sat. only 50% off all Fall & Hallowe'en Merchandise 0 L DE G ^< ,513 A CC 120 Queen St., Blyth 523-9187 A CORRECTION The Citizen apologizes for the errors in the Blyth Legion's ad last week.
