Automotive 1998 \2›.- New luxury, mid-size, trucks enter market By Janice Becker Citizen staff From the sleek new Olds Alero to the rough and rugged Ford F150 Super Cab, the new vehicles for 1999 are set to take on any terrain or elegant occasion. Robert Evans of Evans Chevrolet Oldsmobile Ltd., Goderich is revved up about the Alero, a com- pletely new compact. The two-door and four-door models with standard four cylinder are receiving good reviews says Evans. The engine can also be upgraded to a six cylinder. For the first time in 11 years, Chevy is introducing an all new pickup with a new platform, body and V-8 engine. Due to the GM strike earlier in the year, Evans says the trucks are in short supply currently with only one on the lot but expects the lot to fill up as the Christmas season nears. In the van line, Chevy and Oldsmobile have continued to refine the front-wheel drive Ven- tures and Silhouettes as well as the rear-wheel drive Astrovan. "We also have a good lineup of regular Chevs and Olds, he says. Still tops on the list for the econ- omy-minded is the Cavalier. The two-year-old Intrigue contin- ues to receive accolades, he says, with its 3.8 litre engine and top auto engine in the world. Evans has also seen a steady interest in vehicles which can han- dle all road conditions such as the Blazer, Tahoe and Suburban. Sales Manager Dennis Wood at Bridge Motors in Wingham says Ford has come out with an all-new Windstar for 1999. "It has been redesigned with the addition of a second sliding door." (NC) — We're certainly seeing a lot of them on the roads, so it probably comes as no surprise that in the past few years, increasing numbers of Canadians have been switching to vans and light trucks (LTs) including sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) for everyday driving. As winter approaches, those owners are happy to have four- wheel drive and the extra visibility that comes from a higher ride. Maclean's reported recently that 48 per cent of all vehicles sold in Canada this year will be LTs, just fewer than 700,000! Jud Buchanan a driving expert, has seen the market soar for LT The F150 Super Cab pickup truck has also gained an entrant with the addition of a fourth door. The Ranger also comes in a four- door model. The Escort continues to sell, being named the "Best Compact Car in Initial Quality" recently by J.D. Power and Associates. The Taurus and Mercury Sable have earned a five-star rating for front crash tests for both passenger replacement tires and especially snow tires. "We're seeing more families using sport-utes and pickups as their primary vehicle. They want an extra level of safety and traction for winter driving, so they're buying snow tires." Buchanan notes that these vehicles are sometimes even more likely to be equipped with winter tires, since they make winter travel and weekend getaways more attractive. Skiers and snowmobilers are obvious LT enthusiast, he notes. Last year, according to industry authority DesRosiers Automotive Yearbook, the Ford Explorer and Chev Blazer/GMC Jimmy sold and driver, says Wood. Chrysler boosts its more luxuri- ous models, from the Intrepid to the 300M. The Intrepid is a sporty car geared to the family with room and comfort. Capturing the J.D. Power and Associates "Best Premium Mid- Size Car in Initial Quality", the Concorde has a dramatic road pres- ence with the cab-forward design. The LHS is a world-class luxury more than 20,000 units each with the Jeep Grand Cherokee just behind. Also last year, GM, Ford and Chrysler combined to sell almost 200,000 pickups, many of which went for personal, rather than business use. This change in driving also means a change in driving habits, Buchanan reminds us. "Just because you have a tough vehicle, doesn't let you off the hook for careful winter driving," he points out. No matter what vehicle you drive, it must be prepared for the Canadian climate and equipped to handle it. Every driver should exercise caution and good car being for the discerning driver. It is equipped with the all-new 3.5 litre high-output V6. The 300M was created to express grace, and passion through the driv- ing experience. In the Chrysler tra- dition the letter-series is known for power and performance. An industry-first gives the Chrysler engines cast-in-place iron cylinder liners for increased dura- bility. judgement to stay in control all winter long. — News Canada Trucks, SUVs, popular winter choice 100:0„,, 2.-w 0.00 ockow Wee no 61r ee‘eVIrals:- °t11 esti re SOtes asp Geot SALES-LEAS/NC Come join in on the excitement.
