The Huron Stewardship Council
and the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority (MVCA)
are hosting a unique workshop on
Saturday, Oct. 24 at Hullett Central
Public School. Entitled, Healthy
Streams . . . Healthy People, the
workshop will focus on the
ecological health of area streams as
well as updating participants on
local efforts to improve stream
conditions. •
MVCA staff will begin the
workshop with an overview of
what is known about the condition
of watercourses in the Maitland
watershed. This will be followed by
a presentation by special guest Bill

just 39.5mm of rainfall.
Though Huron and Perth Coun-
ties were hit hard, Taylor says Grey
and Bruce had it worse.
April to September records from
the last five years show 1998 totals
at approximately one half the aver-
age and only 37 per cent of the
rainfall in the wetter 1996.
"The lack of rainfall will no
doubt have long-lasting affects,"
says Taylor. ''Dry wells will be
slow to recover, though lawns will
be alright."
In spite of the dry season and
some surprising crop results, Tay-
lor believes a year such as this
could be one which will have peo-
ple looking at cropping practices.
"One year is not enough to base
changes on, but they may be under,
scrutiny."

although chemical tests tend to
come to mind when water quality is
discussed there are numerous

shade cover," said Beard.
