HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1998-10-21, Page 11name was Mazarin.
I'm assuming that the name
Mazarin wasn't exciting enough
they had to romanticize the whole
subplot by writing in as a main
character someone who didn't even
know Louis XIV.
Now I ask you this: if 500 years
from now someone made a movie of
your life and replaced your good
friend with some well-known
person you never met, wouldn't that
upset you? Wouldn't your friend be
pretty angry?
My point is, I don't think that
Hollywood has the right to mess
with people's lives, whether they've
been dead for 500 years or not,
because now half of the world
actually believes that Louis XIV
was an evil scum, and his sweet,
good heterosexual brother took over
all of France and made all of the
people happy.
My entire generation now has this
warped belief of historical events,
all because Hollywood thought the
truth wouldn't make enough money.
And I think they are wrong.

For Teens, By Teens
Hollywood unfaithful to historical fact
By Erin Roulston
A few weeks ago I saw the movie
The Man In The Iron Mask starring
Leonardo Dicaprio.
I found the plot very interesting,
especially since it was based on real
people. I decided I wanted to learn
more about Louis XIV.
This King of France was born to
Louis XIII and Anne of Austria,
who had been unhappily married for
23 years before having children.
Two years after Louis was
Phillipe. At the age of five, Louis
inherited the throne. He spent most
of his childhood in poverty because
of a revolution which gripped
France for 12 years.
At 13 he could run the country.
But it wasn't until he was 23 and his
first minister, Mazarin, died, that he
really took control.
Horoscope for the week of
Wednesday Oct. 21 to Tuesday
Oct. 27
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Enjoy yourself, have a good time
and relax. This is a good week to
do things you enjoy. Stay out of
any trouble with friends or family
who are in a bad mood. They may
start blaming you for things you
did not do.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov.21)
By getting involved in new
things new romantic opportunities
may present themselves. Avoid
causing confusion by making sure
that new romantic prospects are not
currently involved.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
Concentrate your efforts on
future career plans or current
occupation advancement.You will
find yourself upset with a loved one
when plans change and you are
forced to miss an event you were
anticipating.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You will be enlightened by
listening to other peoples opinions
and ideas. Look for all the
possibilities in every aspect of life,
especially through courses or
travel. Take charge and make
things happen!
Louis XIV is the most famous
absolutist king of Europe, which
means that absolutely everything
was controlled by him. Back then
they believed that the king was
chosen by God: divine right they
called it, and that every decision he
made was God's will.
The legend of the Man in the Iron
Mask began with a man who was
arrested in 1679 (when Louis was
41 years old). He spent the rest of
his days jailed in the I3astille where
his identity was hidden by a black,
velvet mask.
As the years passed by the
rumours of the prisoners grew and
eventually the story was worked up
to a man in an iron mask who was
jailed in an island prison to prevent
France from discovering that the
prisoner was the king's twin.
This is the story that appears in
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Any projects you had been
planning on doing should be
postponed for the week as many
problems will arise. Cost could be a
factor. You will have to
accommodate the wishes and plans
of your parents or older siblings.
Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)
Many arguments will occur if
you and somebody close to you are
unable to make an agreement about
future plans. You will need to
compromise if you want this
relationship to stay friendly.
Aries (Mar. 21-April 19)
To avoid putting yourself in a
position of akwardness„ always be
honest and direct. Only present
ideas to those who are able to help
you. Be prepared to put in extra
time in order to add detail to
projects. The time spent will be
well worth it.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Spending time with young
children will be awarding and
entertaining. Get involved in their
games and play along with them.
Social scenes will provide romantic
opportunities, but one on one time
with a person you love.
Gemini (May 21-June 22)
the most recent film.
Can you imagine what Louis XIV
would do if he saw this film?
Probably laugh his head off. The
fact that they use the names of real
historic figures in a film that is so
historically inaccurate just seems
wrong to me.
First of all, in the movie, Louis'
twin brother Phillipe who actually
existed in real life, was two years
younger than Louis and a
homosexual. Louis' mother seemed
to be in her 40s but was really 61
when Louis was 24.
The character of Louis' first
minister, D'Artagnan, of Three
Musketeers fame, had an affair with
the queen mother. In real life the
first minister was rumoured to have
had an affair with the Queen
Mother, but he was not D'Artagnan,
he was not even a musketeer. His
You may find that you are
drifting apart from somebody close
to you. Examine the reasons why,
and if you feel you are to blame for
it, examine why you did what you
did. Compromising is mandatory at
home, or arguments and deceite
will follow.
Cancer (June 23-July 22)
Your personal life will undergo
sudden changes. Several problems
will arise if you make promises that
you are unable or unwilling to
keep. Keep an eye on a friend or
partner, they could be going behind
your back.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)
Concentration this week should
be focused on career. Decisions in
this and any area of money making
should by well thought out. The
purpose of a relationship with a
peer will backfire if you are not
being honest with yourself about
your intentions.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
Use your reputation to your
advantage and let it aid you in
getting what you want. By
exposing your (hidden) talents to
those who are interested, you will
benifit greatly.
