The score from Sunday afternoon's Bulls home opener in Brussels may not have reflected it
but the home squad was tenacious in their efforts to get control. The Hanover Barons came
away with an 11-2 win . (Ashley Gropp photo)

Belgrave athlete
captures first
at triathalon
Years of athletic endeavors have
led Sjaan Gerth of Belgrave to
provincial and national acclaim as
he earns medals and plaques.
For the first time, 17-year-old
Gerth, son of Bill and Vicki Gerth,
competed in the President's Choice
Triathalon Series, capturing top
honours in the 19 and under catego-
ry.
Gerth says the Ontario sprint
series has shorter distances for each
of the three events than the tradi-
tional triathalon. The swim is 750
metres compared to 1.5 km. The
bike ride is 20 km. (40 km.) and the
run is five km. (10 km.)
Gerth also represented Ontario in
the Canada Summer Games in
Prince George, B.C. taking silver in
the steeplechase.
His plans for the future include
more provincial, national and inter-
national races as well as the Iron-
man competition.
Gerth is a Grade 12 student at
F.E. Madill Secondary School
where he is a member of the cross-
country running, track and field and
cross-country skiing teams
Friday night the Brussels Bulls
travelled to Kincardine, where they
tallied the first of two weekend
losses.
The Bulldogs led 3-2 after 20
minutes. With Andy Agar scoring
both goals of the period, assists
went to Jamie Black and Chad
Fischen.
Kincardine added three goals in
the second to widen their lead 6-2.
In the third, the Bulls out scored
Kincardine 2-1. Dean Walker
scored his first goal as a Bull; as
did-Drew Cornell with an assist
going to Matt Williams.
However the final score favoured
the home team 7-4.
Sunday the Hanover Barons
skated into town and glided to an
11-2 victory over the Bulls.
Goalscorers for the Bulls were
Brett Davidson from Ryan
Gummerson and Corey Campbell
from Gummerson and DAve
Hardy.
This weekend the Bulls travel to
Hanover Friday night for an 8:30
p.m. game. Saturday, Walkerton is
in Brussels for a 9 p.m. game and
Sunday Mount Forest is in Brussels
for 2 p.m.
Too bad
This was one of many to get by the busy Brussels Bulls goalie during the Junior C hockey
action in Brussels on Sunday. The season's home opener against the Hanover Barons was
a bit of a disappointment with the visitors taking a big victory. Julie Bullivant courtesy of
Country 920 CKNX sang the national anthem, then dropped the puck to begin the game.

The edge
Hockey players from Blyth and Brussels were hoping to
get the edge on the competition this season as instructor
Don Rumsey of Clifford led in a hockey school at Brussels
arena last week.
