THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1998. ports Belgrave athlete captures first at triathalon Years of athletic endeavors have led Sjaan Gerth of Belgrave to provincial and national acclaim as he earns medals and plaques. For the first time, 17-year-old Gerth, son of Bill and Vicki Gerth, competed in the President's Choice Triathalon Series, capturing top honours in the 19 and under catego- ry. Gerth says the Ontario sprint series has shorter distances for each of the three events than the tradi- tional triathalon. The swim is 750 metres compared to 1.5 km. The bike ride is 20 km. (40 km.) and the run is five km. (10 km.) Gerth also represented Ontario in the Canada Summer Games in Prince George, B.C. taking silver in the steeplechase. His plans for the future include more provincial, national and inter- national races as well as the Iron- man competition. Gerth is a Grade 12 student at F.E. Madill Secondary School where he is a member of the cross- country running, track and field and cross-country skiing teams Friday night the Brussels Bulls travelled to Kincardine, where they tallied the first of two weekend losses. The season's home opener against the Hanover Barons was a bit of a disappointment with the visitors taking a big victory. Julie Bullivant courtesy of Country 920 CKNX sang the national anthem, then dropped the puck to begin the game.
