Councillors decided at their Oct. 5 meeting to adopt the policy of Lucknow which forbids anyone but firefighters to ride the firetrucks owned by the village. Councillor Joe Seili had present- ed a proposal for consideration. He said there had been a small "inci- dent" last season and was con- cerned that the fire department had not written procedure to follow. Seili suggested that council allow riding on the truck if the truck and a designated driver were available for championship minor sports teams, parades and during any of the firemen's breakfasts. Clerk-Treasurer Donna White said she felt the best policy was that no civilians should ride the truck, but Seili added that that's hard to explain to children. Councillor Mary Stretton com- mended Seili for suggesting a poli- cy be put into place, but felt it should be no riders, no exceptions. The fact that this was a matter of legalities prompted Councillor Greg Wilson to ask how council could make a policy on something that would be illegal. Councillor Mike Thomas concurred. "The fire- fighters can't even tide on the truck. That's why they; got the rescue van." The motion banning any riders on the firetruck due to liability con- cerns passed.
