Fall has to be
the greatest
season for the
TV sports
enthusiast. As
the leaves turn
gold and
crimson in colour it signals that
magical time of year when the North
American quadruplet of professional
sports overlap in a circle of
highlights. For every finish there is
not a beginning but a continuation
within easy reach of a remote
control button.
This year's winner has to be Major
League Baseball. With the
divisional playoffs scheduled to
open on Sept. 29 the sport has been
re-energized through the efforts of
teams and individuals.
While the New York Yankees
were setting an American-League
record for most wins in a single
season the National League
wildcard race involving San
Francisco, Chicago and the New
York Mets remained undecided until
the final day.
At the same time the Mark
McGwire, Sammy Sosa homerun
derby was making headline news
the Cy Young performance of Roger
Clemens led us to believe the Blue
Jays were actually in a playoff race.
The only dark side was the
questions surrounding the survival
of the, Montreal Expos. Attendance
is non-existent and with the refusal
of government financial support for
a new downtown stadium the
continued operation of a club in
Montreal is doubtful.
The National Football League has
returned with NFL Countdown, NFL
Today, Fox NFL Sunday and of
course NFL Monday Night Football
while the Canadian Football League
is reaping the benefits of its Friday
Night Football program.
A successful weekend completed
"Legion Week" at Brussels. A
fantastic turnout was on hand
Friday evening for the Elimination
Draw. Approximately 100 people
sat down to a roast beef dinner and
stayed to enjoy the evening.
The Pipe Band entertained during
an intermission from the drawing
of numbers. Also some local
"Legionnaires" did entertaining
skits and readings.
Many local winners were in
attendance with the evening's big
winner being Murray and Ruth
Lowe. Congratulations to everyone!
Eight teams competed in the
Legion Slopitch tournament on
Saturday. It was a damp start to the
day but turned out sunny and hot in
the afternoon. The "A" winners
were "Heat". The "B" winners were
a Walton team called "The Wonder
Brews" and the "C" winners were
the "Go Getters".
This week is relatively quiet.

The Toronto Argonauts have
survived the loss of Doug Flutie and
with the revival of the Montreal and
Hamilton franchises interest has
been regenerated in this once proud
Canadian tradition.
The National Hockey League's
opening night is set for Oct. 9 and
while Canadian teams will once
again face the uncertainty of the
economy it is the no-shows at
various training camps that is the
biggest concern. The situations
involving Shayne Corson in
Montreal, Doug Weight in Edmon-
ton and Pavel Burd in Vancouver
have yet to be settled, nor has the

many years ago Harold Ballard
could have operated the entire
Toronto team on the combined $10
million-a-year salaries that Maple
Leaf goaltenders Potvin, Curtis
Joseph and Glenn Healy arc
scheduled to earn this year.
If baseball is the winner,
basketball is the loser as it dribbles
towards the first work stoppage in
National Basketball Association
history. On July 1 the NBA owners
initiated a still on-going lockout in
protest of player salaries.
To date the Oct. 6 opening of
training camps has been postponed
and a series of exhibition games
cancelled. The only good news is
that management and union
continue to negotiate in hopes of
being ready for the Nov. 3 season
opener.
And finally to compliment the
illusion -and fantasy of every sports
minded couch potato our local cable
network, Ward Cable TV Ltd., is
adding to its programming schedule
Headline SportS the sports pipeline
to the world, 24 hours a day, seven
days a week, and the CTV Sports
Net, Canada's first regional sports
service.

The Annual Variety Show is at
Parkwood Hospital on Saturday
afternoon. This is an entertaining
afternoon for the veterans put on by
this zone. Many members from
surrounding Legions will be
attending and gift bags are
presented to the veterans.
Anyone interested in going is
asked to contact the Legion at 887-

Friday saw the Brussels Bulls
'open their 1998/99 hockey season
as they travelled to Mount Forest.
The game was closer than the score
indicated.
Mount Forest scored one in the
first. The Bulls only goal came off
the stick of Mark Wilson with
assists going to Matt Williams and
Andy Agar.
Mt. Forest, then scored four
unanswered goals to lead 5-1 after
40 minutes.
There was no scoring in the third
to make the final 5-1 for Mount
Forest.
Sunday the Bulls travelled to
Kincardine with only 12 skaters.
The Bulls' only goal came off the
stick of Jeff Sauve from Agar and
Brett Fischer.
Bulls' goalie Smith stopped 60
shots, however the Bulls lost 12-1.
This weekend the team travels
back to Kincardine Friday night.
Sunday the new look Bulls have
