The Walton TransCan this year
was a huge success as a result of
the effort and participation of many
people. Attendance was over
10,000 with over 900 rider entries.
It is being televised across North
America via Speedvision, Outdoor
Life and the new CTV sports
channel. It is unquestionably the
largest event of its kind in Canada
and one of the premier events in
North America.

The Brussels Tigers advanced to
the Huron County finals for the
fourth year in a row by eliminating
the Exeter Braves in four games
with an 8-3 victory at home on
Friday night.
As has been the norm the Tigers
hit the scoreboard in the bottom of
the first to take a 2-0 lead. Tim
Fritz led off with a hustling double
and was plated by a Todd Uhrig
single. With two out Doug Conley
scored with an RBI single.
The Tigers added to their
advantage in the third as Steve Fritz
powered a homerun to right centre
to put the Tigers up 3-0.
Exeter scored one in the top of
the fourth, but the home side
quickly answered as Moe Pipe
scored Greg Fritz with a fielder's
choice groundout.
The Braves scratched back to
make it 4-3 by pushing across two
in the fifth. The Tigers then
exploded for four runs in .the
bottom of the sixth as S. Fritz,
Conley, Ron Strome and Brett

The Blyth Old-Timers wrapped
up their season this past weekend
winning the year-end tournament,
with four straight victories in
Belgrave.
Blyth defeated Bayfield 20 - 19,
Auburn 18 -13, Winthrop 9 - 5, and
Mardoch 25 - 8 to win their second
straight championship.
The WOAA Senior Hockey
Program is preparing itself for the
1998-99 season. The first order of
business was the acceptance of two
new teams, the Hensall Sherwoods
and Monkton Wildcats, into league
play.
Hensall is a first-time entry while
Monkton returns after a seven-year
absence. Both teams will play in
the Senior A West Division
alongside Ripley, Lucknow,
Goderich and Clinton.
The Mildmay franchise has been
shifted to the East Division and
will play against teams from
Arthur, Palmerston, Dundalk,
Shelburne and Wiarton.
The Senior AA division remains
unchanged with entries from
Durham, Elora, Milverton,
Wellesley and Tavistock.
Last season the Durham
Thundercats claimed their ninth
championship in 12 years with a
four-game sweep of the Milverton
4-Wheel Drixes, while Shelburne
swept Clinton in three games for
the Senior A championship. The
Shelburne/Clinton series featured
70 minutes of overtime, including
37 minutes of extra time in a 1-0
championship game.
The Brussels Crusaders have
taken a second year's leave of
absence. The close proximity of
rival teams and the lack of
graduates from the minor and
junior systems led to a shortage of
available players in the area.
The Crusaders were Senior A
champions in 1996 and WOAA
Grand Champions in 1988 and
1990.
