HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1998-09-23, Page 9Ice storms, high winds or fallen
tree limbs can bring hydro
lines down. And even a
fallen wire that
seems dead can be
dangerous. So don't
go near the wires,
warn others not to
and report the fallen
wires to your local
hydro or the
police as soon
as possible.
If a line falls
across your
vehicle, stay
inside until a hydro
crew removes the line.
If there's a live power line
touching your car, putting even
one foot on the ground can be a
fatal move to make.

enjoyed by all.

Concern over a rash of break-ins
in the Brussels area was the main
topic of discussion during the
September Community Policing
Committee meeting.
Representatives from Turnberry,.
Howick, Morris, Blyth, Brussels
and Grey were present for the
meeting, held at the Morris Twp.
council chambers.
Brussels Councillor Mary Stret-
ton called attention to the number
of village businesses which had
been burglarized in recent weeks.
Merchants had contacted her com-
plaining that they were being asked
to pay more for policing, but
seemed to be getting less service,
she said.
Community Policing Officer Dell
Mercey shared the frustration. "The
problem is we're not magicians. We
can sit for three hours in a town and
nothing will happen."
He explained that during the
evening officers often double up
leaving,,just two or three cruisers
for the Huron detachment area.
"We just can't be everywhere, " he
said.
Noting that the break-ins are
under investigation, Mercey added,
that in the near future a two-person
break-and-enter squad is to be
established which will work exclu-
sively on break and enter cases.
Mention was made of the Bay-
field Watchdog Group, which the
committee is investigating further.
Const. Mercey said he would attend
a meeting of Brussels council to
discuss the program.
Kathy Bromley, a representative
for Blyth is also going to talk to
village council about the idea.
Another topic brought forward
was with regards to huttters on pri-
vate land. Grey Reeve Robin Dun-
bat brought the issue forward
following complaints from some
township residents.
Const. Mercey explained that
trespassers can be reported to the
police. However, the complainant
should try to get a license number
in the event the hunters leave
before the police arrive.
Committee Chair John Saxon
asked for clarification on the law
regarding school bus lights. It was

noted that when the bus lights are
flashing and the bus is stopped,
both oncoming drivers and those
travelling behind the bus, must
stop.
A representative from Howick,
Mandy Stewart, said she had spo-
ken with many people who didn't
realize that pulling over for an
emergency vehicle when its lights
are flashing and the siren is on, was
not common courtesy but law.
Some discussion followed on
public awareness and how to keep
drivers informed of rules such as
these.
Appreciation was passed on to
Const. Mercey from a resident for
his sensitivity during the investiga-
tion following an accident this
summer.
It was decided that the committee
will continue to meet monthly.
However, meetings will not be held
in December and July.
The next meeting of the Commu-
nity Policing Committee, which is
open to the public, is Oct. 21 at
7:30 p.m. in Howick.
