Marie was the pianist and Marion had the program. Her guest speaker was her brother David Hemingway. He told the ladies about his trip January 1997, to Bluefield, Nicaragua. He was part of a group of people that through the United Church's London Conference, went there for 17 days and was able to put a roof on a school. Marie took the meeting and Shelley and Dianne served a delicious lunch. WI to tour business The WI will meet this Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 6:45 p.m. at Walton Hall. Pupils host welcome assembly With 19 new students (including JK) and a few more new faces, the Walton Public School began their week with a 'get acquainted assembly'. The students were able to meet their new principal Alice McDowell who lives near Belgrave and the new grade 3/4 teacher, Elaine Haney who lives outside of Egmondville. Diana Dolmage has taken the position of secretary for the school. The week was spent learning the rules, getting organized and getting to know each other. However it wasn't all fun and games as word has it there was a spelling test given. Principal McDowell said it was a wonderful week and she enjoyed the children very much. As well as her principal duties she is also teaching Grade 2/3 science and art, Grade 3 math and phys. ed. In talking with Elaine Haney, she said how much she enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and liked how everyone worked together. Meet the teacher night will be Wednesday, Sept. 16 from 6 to 8 Continued on page 19 will began at the manse Oct. 14 in the mornings. They will meet twice a month and the theme is "Sneak Peaks". Everyone is more than welcome to attend. There is no service in Walton as it will be Bluevale's anniversary service next Sunday. Rev. Murray's sermon was called, "Still Searching". The Luke readings told about three parables of Jesus, the lost sheep, the lost coin and the prodigal son. Parables are extreme, exaggerated examples of what God is like, he said. They are supposed to be simple and shocking. They are designed to get people thinking in creative new ways. They have the power to transform. They are to grab attention, make a point and then ask, what are we going to do about it?" The three parables tell that God's love is reckless, relentless, and remarkably extravagant, he said. It is reckless, like the shepherd who leaves the 99 sheep to find the one which is lost. It is relentless, like the woman who tears her house apart to find the lost coin. It is remarkably extravagant, like the father of the prodigal son, who welcomes his wayward son home again. These parables show how God's love and care is passionate, persistent and plentiful. Rev. Murray said "We matter a lot to God, even when we are lost and not doing all the things we should be. God never gives up on us. The door to forgiveness is never shut. There is always room for one more heart to love." Rev. Murray said that in the parables God never judges. He works in these stories by the strength of mercy, compassion and forgiveness. The stories all end. with a party. "We are called to give up judging others and join in the party which celebrates the healing and reconciling love of God."
