For some students it will be a
return to old friends and new
teachers, for others it will be the
beginning of a new and exciting
world of independence, new friends
and new adventures. Stay Alert ...
Stay Safe, Canada's leading
streetproofing program hopes that
for all, the start of the school year
will be a safe and happy
experience.
Being able to talk to your child is
the key to your relationship. It is
wise to start this good habit early
sp that in later years it remains a
comfortable and important part of
your routine. ,
• Always ask them about their
day.
• Learn about new friends and
teachers.
• Listen for any signs of anxiety
that could signal potential
problems.
The playground is often the first
experience children have with the
realities of the outside world. For
the most part, that experience is
positive, but as children develop
their independence and learn to
play with others, they also begin to
develop a sense of the many
different ways people respond to
situations.
• If they are being threatened by a
bully at recess time, suggest they
play close to the teacher on yard
duty.
• Inviting a bully to join a game
that their friends are playing is a
In September when Kitchener's
The Centre In The Square opens for
the season, there will be more to
see and it won't just be on the
stage!
The Raffi Armenian Theatre is
undergoing major renovations this
summer. All the seats, curtains and
acoustical banners are being
replaced; the walls and floors
painted - the whole works! A
beautiful new auditorium is being
created without spoiling the
atmosphere and the acoustics of
The Centre that everyone enjoys
and appreciates.
The Centre is presenting three
great opportunity for patrons to be
amongst the first to see the new
auditorium.
The first show The Centre will
present to mark this momentous
good idea.
• If the bully's harmful behaviour
continues, encourage them to tell
a teacher, principal or other adult
they trust.
Many parents are not
comfortable allowing their children
to walk to school by themselves
until they are older. Here are a few
suggestions to make the trip to
school a safe one:
• Know your children's routes to
school, to friends' homes and to
play areas. Walk with them until
you are acquainted with their
routine.
•Encourage them to walk with a
buddy, or hire an older student to
accompany your kids to school
and back.
• Check out the neighbourhood
with your children and warn them
of potential hazards. Point out
Block Parent® homes and other
safe places.
• Tell them to always refuse to go
anywhere with people they don't
know. Teach them to step well
back if someone they don't know
stops to ask directions, so they can
get away fast.
