Pastor plans retirement in Thornbury
Retiring
After 43 years in the ministry, Pastor Jim Carne of Hope
Chapel Missionary Church in Auburn is retiring. With his
wife, Lorraine, he plans to relocate to Thornbury and
enjoy many hobbies while staying active in the church.

Citizen staff
Through 43 years and seven
churches, Pastor Jim Carne of
Huron Chapel Missionary Church
in Auburn, has brought his brand of
the gospel to rural and inner-city
communities.
Pastor Came, who began preach-
ing for the Free Methodist Church,
came to the Auburn Missionary
congregation 13 years ago and has
increased attendance from 40 to a
high of 175.
However, he is now set to retire,
and was bid farewell by his many
friends in the community this past
weekend.
He and his wife, Lorraine, who
laughs that she is also retiring, plan
to stay in the village for a few
months, but expect to move to their
mobile home in Thornbury before
winter, to be closer to one of their
daughters.
Pastor Carne's time with the
church has been varied and inter-
spersed with experiences in mis-
sionary work and even truck
driving.
In the early days, sometimes
money was very short so other
work was picked up to help make
ends meet, the Carries say.
There were years when all they
got paid was the collection from the
offering, says Mrs. Came, and they
had to pay all their expenses in
those days.
"We were getting $32 a week (in
the late 1950s) and we had three
children. We had to judge the food

Soon the tiny congregation had
grown and developed a choir which
was asked to perform at various
locations. Unfortunately, the
church was closed after Pastor
Came left.
It was that reaching out into the
community which eventually
brought Pastor Came to Auburn
and allowed him to bring people to
the church.
While attending a camp meeting,
Pastor Came became reacquainted
with a woman he had know previ-
ously from the Goderich area.
Her husband, who was on the
board for the Auburn Missionary
Church, eventually asked Pastor
Carne to fill in as they sought a
new minister.
Pastor Carne and his wife say
they felt immediately at home
when they entered Auburn Church.
"We had never felt like this
before and we were afraid they
wouldn't ask us to come back,"
says Mrs. Came.
The Carnes arrived in Auburn in
late August of 1985 and by October
were asked to remain.
The people have been wonderful
to us," she says. "These have been
wonderful years and it is a great
way to go out. After 13 years they
still love us and we still love them."
Baptism
at BMF
Several youth from BMF were
baptized on Sunday, Aug. 30. Ben
Dettweiler, Andra Dettweiler,
Cindy Koch, Destiny Lichty, Tim
Procter, and Joanna Steinman,
received baptism. Faith sponsors
included Don Procter, Lena
Siegers, Anneke Pardys, Tillie
Lichty, Elwin Garland, Darlene
Hemingway.
Following the baptisms a
fellowship meal was held at the
church.
Lloyd Koch was worship leader.
Patti Wiebe and Kathy Procter
were in charge of the music.
Pastor Ben Wiebe gave the
message entitled "Baptized to
Belong to Christ".
The scripture readings were from
Matthew 28: 18-20 and Romans 6:
3-8.
Pastor Carrie concurs with her
assessment of the village saying it
has been a delightful time and he
will always cherish the friendships.
"The hardest part will be leaving
people," she adds.
The Carries plan to travel, bird
watch, paint, garden, do missionary
work and enjoy their leisure time.
Jeremy Shuart, the current youth
pastor, will take over Sunday ser-
vices until a new pastor is appoint-
ed in mid-September, to assume
duties in January.
we bought by the offering," she
says.
"It was a great preparation for
preaching," laughs Pastor Came.
"We had to live by faith."
One of his most exciting church-
es was in the inner-city of Hamilton
-where he served prior to coming to
Auburn.
It was a small congregation
which was being threatened with
closure.
Pastor Carrie soon learned that a
large portion of his community
lived in housing projects or-were
households headed by single
women.
Following his life-long philoso-
phy, he ministered to them, he did
not preach.
A course in mechanics and
plumbing gave him a way to help
the people he needed to reach and
they found a man to whom they
could relate.
"It was the key to my ministry,"
he says. " I would go out to do calls
in a suit and find myself doing tow
brake jobs."
