Brussels Livestock report
Fed steers, heifers sell on steady, market
The sales at Brussels Livestock
for the week ending Aug. 28 were:
fed cattle, 560; cows, 241; veal and
bob calves. 538; lambs, 422 and
stockers 1,394.
All classes of fed steers and
heifers were selling on a steady
market. Cows also sold steady. On
Thursday the veal traded steady to
last week with the lambs selling
actively at fully steady prices.
There were 367 fed steers on
offer selling from $87 to $90 to the
high of $98.25. A limousin steer
consigned by Howard Martin,
Brussels, weighing 1,340 lbs. sold
for $98.25 with his total offering of
fourteen steers, averaging 1,312
lbs. selling for the overall price of
$88.76.
Twenty-two steers consigned by
Don Dundas, Crediton, averaging
1,394 lbs. sold for an average price
of $89.31 with sales to $94. A red
steer consigned by Karl Terpstra,
Mitchell, weighing 1,190 lbs. sold
The Ontario Federation of
Agriculture (OFA) has stated that it
is not opposed to competition in the
electricity system through the
Energy Competition Act, if the
interests of the farmers are not
compromised.
Peter Canning, executive
committee member representing
OFA, recently addressed the
Standing Committee on Resource
Development, stating: "There are a
number of concerns with the
Energy Competition Act which
must be addressed if the act is to
truly reflect the best interests of
farmers as energy consumers."
