For Teens, By Teens
OFF THE WALL
Youth questions magazine's superficiality
By Erin Roulston
I recently bought an issue of
Cosmopolitan Magazine because
Minnie Driver, one of my favourite
actresses, was on the cover.
I am always excited to learn
more about the people I look up to.
However, I was angered when I
found the story on her. "Q & A
with Minnie".
The questions? "How do you
keep your skin looking so great?
What's the best tip you've learned
from makeup artists? What's your
fitness routine?"
Is this all that matters? Here is a
talented, and intellectual woman
By Ashley Gropp
Picture this: a young couple is
walking together on the beach.
They have never slept together
before because she had not felt
ready. She is wearing a cardigan
over a tank top. They kiss and she
takes off the long sleeve shirt. Her
boyfriend looks at her and asks,
"Are you sure?"
This is a scene from the movie I
Know What You Did Last Summer,
The scene described here made me
wonder why he assumed she was
telling him she wanted to have sex.
I have taken off many cardigans in
the presence of males and never
once did they assume I was about
to have sex with them because of it.
As I watched this scene I was
annoyed. And I realized this isn't
the only movie I've seen that made
such ridiculous presumptions. After
all, couldn't she maybe have been
warm or she just may not have
found the shirt comfortable?
After I watched this movie I
became curious about what other
teenagers hate in movies. Some that
I asked hated how every lead char-
acter is always attractive, some that
and all that matters is her looks? I
don't care if she does a 45 minute
cardiovascular workout or 45
hours, I want to know her favourite
writer, her opinion on something
intellectual ... anything but what
colour of lipstick she likes best.
My outrage at the superficial
attitude portrayed by this women's
magazine suddenly reminded me
why I started this teen page.
Nearly every teenage girl has a
copy of the latest YM or Seventeen
magazines. Many have
subscriptions.
Month after month they read
about how to get a boy, how to
perfect the latest makeup styles,
how to do their hair and how to
the endings are almost always unre-
alistically happy and some hate that
action heroes kill millions of
machine gun holding enemies at
once without getting hit them-
selves.
One girl told me that she really
hates it when sequels are made for
movies, because they are never as
good as the original film.
Two boys I asked both said they
hate when they think they are about
to see a sex scene, only for that to
be cut out.
I was told by another male that it
irritates him that everybody says
everything perfectly. Nobody ever
stammers, gets their words mixed
or says something they didn't mean
to say, unless it is a comedy and
that character is the idiot of the
movie, in which case he or she
always does it.
Similarly, a girl I talked to said
she hates how the leads always say
"just the right thing" all the time.
They never say anything that
sounds different from how they
meant it.
Another girl I talked to said that
she hates that in almost every
dress in the latest trends.
These magazines do not have
even the faintest trace of anything
intellectual. To look at them you'd
think that teenagers do not have
brains and obsess solely over looks
and boys.
I wanted a magazine which
stimulated thought. Something that
would encourage originality, as
well as help kids look and feel
good. I decided that the best way to
do this was to do it myself.
I wrote up a proposal for a single
page of the paper, every other
week, where teens like myself
could express their thoughts and
feelings, and I took the proposal to
the editor of The North Huron
movie you see, there is al m ays a
happy ending.
There is a guy I know who hates
how unrealistic it is for the nice
guys in movies to always get the
girl.
I learned that today's teenagers
basically don't want to be patron-
ized when we watch movies, and
that we'd like a dose of reality in
them.
I also realized that in movieland
unattractive people, who stutter and
stammer when talking can't be
heroes. And unlike life, we are led
to believe that a bad ending will
never exist.
VIRGO (THE VIRGIN)
Aug. 24 - Sept. 22
Virgo can be likened to the
efforts of the adult ego to provide
structure to life and, through well-
ordered service to make a
significant contribution to the
world. Strong moral tendencies
lend Virgo a serious image, and
indeed only certain forms of
humour appeal to it. Discriminating
to a fault, Virgo is in fact highly
selective concerning most forms of
human experience.
— Secret Language of Birthdays
Citizen. She liked the idea and
there it was: "For Teens, By
Teens".
A little more than two years later,
here we are. Many thoughtful
articles, and many fun ones have
graced this page. But now it may be
over. Only three of us have stuck to
it, each of us writing one article
nearly every two weeks. We are all
getting older and getting busier,
preparing for university and the big
working world, and we hardly have
time anymore. Nobody else has
come forward with an interest in
taking part, so it seems that this
page is nearing its end.
But it has been a great experience
and I will continue to write and to
encourage deeper thought for as
long as I can, because I want the
world (or at least the readership
area) to know that teens do care
about the world around them, not
just the members of the opposite
sex.
