4-H competition draws 83
A very successful Huron County
4-H Judging Competition was held
on Aug. 11 at the Seaforth
Fairgrounds. Congratulations to the
83 4-H members and interested 4-H
supporters who judged nine classes,
ranging from dairy cows to healthy
snacks, and answered a thought-
provoking quiz.

nitrate poisoning of the cattle.
Because of the short stalks, Hall
says the corn will absorb the usual
amount of nitrate from the soil dur-
ing a rainfall as has occurred
recently, but the nitrate is stored in
a smaller area, thereby concentrat-
ing it.
Farmers should not feed drought-
stressed corn to the cattle before
having it tested for nitrate content.
After a three-week fermentation

in a silo, much of the excess nitrate
will have been converted to silo
gas.
High levels of nitrate are most
concentrated in the bottom third of
the stalk, so cutting it higher may
also limit the amount of nitrate in
the silage, says Hall.
The third factor is the increased
levels of silo gas created due to
high nitrate content.
Farmers are warned to be extra
cautious this year.
Hall expects there are some fields

of both corn and beans which will
be destroyed because of the
drought, but says even soybean for-
age can be used for feed if there is
enough there to harvest.
There may be some fourth-cut
hay as there was very little second
and third cuts.
There are still shortages expect-
ed, but Hall says corn silage is an
attractive alternative as it is cur-
rently the cheapest feed product.
Insurance coverage claims are
also expected to be higher this year.

abeth McKercher who celebrated
50 years of marriage on Sunday,
Aug. 22.
