Blyth council briefs Tenders called for paving of King Street Clerk-Treasurer John Stewart advised Blyth councillors at the Aug. 18 meeting that the first Ontario Works program participant had left, having secured a full-time Irvin George Bowes and Mary Elizabeth (Betty) (Gillespie) Bowes celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and close friends at the Church of Christ in Stratford. Married by Rev. Hazelwood, on July 31, 1948, in the groom's home in Blyth, the couple was attended by Jean Wood, maid of honour, flowergiri, Betty Jean Hussey and best man Gerald Watson. The bride was given in marriage by her brother-in-law Everett Hussey. The newlyweds honeymooned in Bracebridge, a half-day journey from Blyth at the time. position. A second worker is wait- ing on paperwork which would allow him to begin. ***t Councillors Rob Lawrie and The Bowes raised two daughters, Maxine (John Brush) and Connie (Vernon Bromley). Also celebrat- ing with them at their 50th were with grandchildren Maridale and Mark Vogels, Aaron and Russell Bromley and Christine, Karen and Johnny Brush. Members of Blyth United Church, Mr. Bowes also served on Blyth Fire Department for 40 years, 30 as chief. He worked for Howson and Howson for 35 years, retiring in 1987. Special guests at the anniversary celebration were attendants Jean Wood and Betty Jean Hussey. The best man was absent due to illness. Doug Scrimgeour along with Stew- art, attended the Association of Municipalities conference in Toronto, Aug 23-26. Reeve Mason Bailey attended on behalf of the county. *** Tenders will be called for the reconstruction and paving of King Street, between Morris and Mill Streets. Quotes will be sought for just paving work as well as paving with curbs and gutters. Stewart said there is $36,000 in the budget for road work as well as $10,000 in reserves. There may be some savings due to shared costs with the Avon Mait- land District School Board which is having a section in front of Blyth Public School paved as well as the PUC, as they wish to install a watermain. Tenders close Sept. 15. *** Stewart was asked to obtain an estimate, for repairs to the village truck. *** With the amalgamation of public utility commissions in the works and an eventual choice of electrici- ty providers, council agreed to allow Enershare Technology Cor- poration to complete an energy audit of the municipally-owned buildings. The audit would indicate potential energy savings for the vil- lage such as the replacement of lighting fixtures. Though council accepted the audit proposal, they were hesitant to deal with any longer term ener- gy-supply agreement with the firm, in part due to the possibility of future municipal amalgamations. Reeve Bailey said any long term contracts should be discussed with potential amalgamation partners before committing. *** Council approved the purchase of a plain paper fax from Skeoch Business Equipment for a cost of $950. The PUC will be asked to share the cost. It was calculated that the cost of the machine will be recouped in a year with savings in paper costs both from the thermal paper fax and extra photocopying which had been required. *** Joe Hallahan asked why burning Continued on page 20
