Monkton wins Brussels
fastball tournament
The defense bent but did not
break as the Monkton Muskrats
held on to defeat KW Pride 4-3 for
the 1998 Brussels Fastball
Championship, Aug. 9.
Monkton held a 4-0 lead until the
Pride offense came alive in their
last at bat scoring three and putting
the tying run on second base.
The championship was the first
for Monkton in Brussels
tournament history, (they lost to
Mitchell in the 1996 final while an
earlier era of Moncrief
Intermediates finished second to
Fullarton in 1972 consolation play)
while the finalist title was the
second consecutive for Kitchener.
In consolation play the Wroxeter
Rippers came from behind to defeat
the Salford Tigers 7-5. The
performance was the best ever by a
Wroxeter club while this was
Salford's first appearance in the
invitational.

two.

ing five more across the plate while

Walton Squirt Girls continue winning ways in playoffs
The Walton Squirt Girls are hot
as they continue to win, earning
two victories in the playoffs.
In the first of their B-side Tri-
County games, Walton took on Lis-
towel, Aug 5.
With only eight players and an
automatic out for the ninth batter,
the girls picked it up a notch to cap-
ture a 12-9 win.
Going to the plate first, Walton
racked up two when Sarah McDon-
ald and Michelle Cook doubled.
Cook later scored when she stole
home.
A single from Mandy Mitchell
and a double by Jen McClure were
stranded.
Allowing only one run, pitcher
Cook aided in each out, catching a
pop up, nabbing a baseline hit and
tossing to first then striking out the
batter for the third out.
With two down in the second,
Crystal Gibbons singled, McDon-
ald tripled and Krista Shortreed sin-
gled for a total of two runs.

The playoff season began in
Londesboro this week
McDonald earned two outs in the
second when she tagged a runner
out at the plate for the first out then
tossed to Cook who stopped a run-
ner stealing home for the final out.
Tied 4-4, Walton was held to one
run in the third when Mitchell sin-
gled then was pushed around on a
one-baser from McClure.
Again defense ruled in the bot-
tom of the inning when first base
player Cook, grabbed a hard hit
ball down the line to beat out the
runner.
With the bases loaded, shortstop
Shortreed made a great play, catch-
ing a pop fly then tossing to second
base player Mitchell for the double
play and the inning-closer.
Listowel was held to two runs.
Walton players rallied when Gib-
bons walked and Cook made it to
first on a missed catch of a third
strike.
After singling to first, Mitchell
and McClure stole second and
third, before Ashley Halley got to
first on another missed catch. Four
runs scored.
Nice nabs by Cook on first, a toss
from Mitchell at second to first and
a reflex catch by McDonald on the
mound made the outs look easy,
holding Listowel scoreless.
Up 9-6, Walton tacked on three
more to widen the margin. Gibbons
singled before McDonald brought
her home on a round-tripper. Cook
walked, stole second and third
before coming home on a Mitchell
single.
Listowel made a comeback
attempt, pushing three home,
though great catches by pitcher
McDonald slowed the attack.
The final was 12-9.
