Clinton's main street on Blyth Festival stage services picked it up, and the photo of Marg and Phil and dripping chili appeared in many newspapers across the county under the headline Hot Rivalry. This is the incident that starts the plot rolling in Keith Roulston's hilarious satire Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! so to celebrate opening night, the Blyth Festival is hosting — you guessed it — a chili cookoff feattiring the mayors and reeves of Hiiron County including Ron McKay of Clinton, Ben Hoogenboom of Exeter, Deb Shewfelt of Goderich, Dave Scott of Seaforth, Don Carter of Wingham, Ralph Watson, Brno--.4s and Mason Bailey of Blyth. The culinary skills of these municipal politicians will be judged by Dusty Hill from CKNX The public will be provided with samples so they can vote for The People's Choice Award. Chili tasting will take place in the Blyth Memorial Hall Courtyard between 6 and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6. And since the aroma is bound to make everyone hungry, a full chili dinner including salad roll and a drink will be offered by the Festival Cafe for a mere $4 to those lucky patrons with a ticket for the premiere performance of Jobs! George Lonsbary at Clinton OPP Detachment, 482-9626. OPP seek auxiliary officers Once upon a time, there was a county town named Beauport which hosted a winter carnival featuring a chili cookoff. The contestants were the mayors and reeves of all the other towns and townships in that county. Beauport's mayor, Marg Scott, always won the cooking contest, but one amazing year the prize went to Phil Gainsmore, the newly- elected mayor of Beauport's scorned rival town of Winstead. In a fit of pique, Marg Scott dumped a whole bowl of chili over Phil's head. It made a great picture for the local papers - so great that the wire The Huron Ontario Provincial Police Detachment is now accepting applications for Auxiliary Officers. The application forms can be picked up at any OPP office. This is a volunteer position. To qualify people must be prepared to commit the time and effort required of the program which includes a minimum of 10 hours per month of patrol time and four hours a month of training time. Mattea Goldstein, head scenic artist in Blyth for the 1995 to 1997 seasons, has been honoured with the Pauline McGibbon Award which recognizes a member of the Ontario community theatre in the early stages of their career who has displayed a unique talent and potential for excellence. In just four years as a scenic artist, Goldstein has worked on more than 70 productions for small and medium theatres and televi- sion. Upcin returning to Ontario in 1993 after studying theatre design in England, Goldstein continued to learn and develop through the Ontario College of Art and Design. Patron's of the Blyth Festival will remember the wonderful backdrop of "main street" Seaforth that graced the set for the 1997 production of Nothing in the Paper by Dave Scott. This year, the view from the municipal office in Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! by Keith Roulston, is exactly the view you would see if you looked out the window of the municipal office in Clinton. Set designer Victoria Wallace, fresh from working on a mega-scale for the Princess of Wales Theatre's mega-production Needfire, has created a scaled down, three- dimensional, finely detailed perspective of the lovely yellow brick buildings which line Albert Street. The other half of the divided set features one small dining room of a restaurant housed in a local mansion, complete with glowing fire place. Because Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! takes a wry look at municipal politics and finds hearty laughter in a fictional mayor's efforts to attract big business, Wallace felt that the architecture of her set should be firmly rooted in the local environment. Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! opens Aug. 6 and plays to Aug. 29 at the Blyth Festival.
