For Teens, By Teens
Children tell jewels
By Mark Nonkes
While I was "surfing" the net one
day I came across this site called
"Fun Things to Do in an Elevator".
Here are some of the better
suggestions:
• Make race car noises when
anyone gets on or off.
• Blow your nose and offer to
show the contents of your kleenex
to other passengers.
• Crack open your briefcase or
purse, and while peering inside ask:
"Got enough air in there?"
• Offer name tags to everyone
getting on the elevator. Wear yours
upside-down.
• When arriving at your floor,
grunt and strain to yank the doors
open, then act embarrassed when

This year's Blyth Festival Young
Company is well on its way to what
appears to be another wonderful
performance.
The Young Company, an
offspring of the Festival, is
composed of teenage actors This
year, actor and associate artistic
director of the Festival, Eric Coates
is the director of the Young
Company. He said he wanted to
direct the Company because he was
more impressed with it last year
they open by themselves.
• On the highest floor, hold the
door open and demand that it stay
open until you hear the penny you
dropped down the shaft go "plink"
at the bottom.
• Do Tai Chi exercises.
• Stare, grinning, at another
passenger for a while, and then
announce: "I've got new socks on!"
• Bet the other passengers you
can fit a quarter in your nose.
• Show other passengers a wound
and ask if it looks infected.
• Holler "Chutes away!"
whenever the elevator descends.
• Stare at another passenger for a
while, then announce, "you're one
of THEM!" and move to the far
corner of the elevator.
than anything else.
The Company is performing a
play 1837: the Farmer's Revolt.
The plot of the play is about the
Farmer's uprising against the
government, who was preventing
them from developing the land the
way they would have liked.
The way the Company is run, it
is a unique experience, because
these teens are having the
opportunity to work alongside, and
be guided by, a professional
theatre. Zoey Onn, RR 3, Blyth, is
in her sixth year as a Young
• Ask each passenger getting on
if you can push the button for them.
• Wear a puppet on your hand
and talk to other passengers
"through" it.
• Start a sing-along.
• When the elevator is silent, look
around and ask "is that your
beeper?"
• Shadow box.
• Listen to the elevator walls with
a stethoscope.
• Draw a little square on the floor
with chalk and announce to the
other passengers that this is your
"personal space."

Company actor. She said that this
year was different from the others
and "more like a real company."
She said that there was more work
than some of the other times. She
also said that the Company gives
her the opportunity to get some
experience in a semi-professional
atmosphere before she goes looking
for work as a professional actor.
This year is Shannon Scott's first
year. The 18-year-old Londesboro-
area teen says she has "always

When working with kids all
through the summer you hear a few
,funny comments from them. These
comments usually aren't meant to
make us laugh, but because kids
can be very blunt at times, it
usually causes me to chuckle.
Just the other day we had a new
class of level ones. We were going
over the pool rules when one little
girl said we should always jump
feet first into the shallow end.
When asked why she commented
that, if we went in head first we
would tip over!
Another lifeguard and I had a
chat with a .young boy, about 3
years old, one day. The boy said
that he saw Lorraine's house in
town the other day. Lorraine in turn
told the young boy that her house
had legs and comes to visit my
house.
other commitment, like working."
She says she really enjoyed being a
pa:t of the Young Company this
summer and wishes that she had
taken part in it for the past few
summers as well.
Nathan Sherred, 16, also of the
Blyth area is in his second year. He
started because of a friend who was
in it and because he enjoys acting.
He really enjoys meeting new
people and says that in the Young
Company he meets many others
who enjoy acting.
1837: - The Farmer's Revolt will
be performed Aug. 10 - 15 at
rp.m. at the Arch on the end of
Drummond Street. On Aug. 13,
they will perform in the afternoon
at Van Egmond House and at
7 p.m. at the Gaol in Goderich.
So now wherever we see him he
tells us his house hasn't grown legs
yet but he's trying to get them to
grow so he can visit us.
Last year we were teaching yet
another Level one class. Sometimes
to get into the water we would play
a game we call the paint game. We
ask a child what their favourite
colour is and proceed to "paint"
them that colour. We asked a
young boy what his favourite
colour is and he replied "John
Deere green" with a big smile.
Kids do say the darndest things
and it's a wonderful change of pace
in a world where no one will say
what they really mean.
We could learn a lot from kids
with their innocent comments and
perspectives. It sure does brighten
my day!
Traits of Aug. 5 people
Young Company prepares wonderful show
From The Secret Language of
Birthdays.
Those born on Aug. 5 are able to
carry through their decisions with
great resolve, steadfastness and
determination. Although they may
be of an emotional nature, they
display a remarkable mastery over
their feelings, and accomplish their
ends naturally and easily.
Though Aug. 5 people maintain a
cool and unflappable exterior, it is
not as easy as it looks. Indeed it can
be a bit like sitting on a volcano.
Most discover at some point that
their level of success is in direct
proportion to their ability to control
and direct their mental energy and
to stay on an even keel.
Although most are mentally
oriented, there is no denying the
tremendous physical prowess
granted to these gifted people. Such
natural advantages may be
squandered or misused, however,. if
their willpower is lacking. A
tendency toward violence that so
often accompanies this day must be
sublimated into creative endeavors,
particularly in the case of the males.
In fact, the aggressions of Aug. 5
people in general should be directed
at an early age into competitive
sports and physical activities. Chess,
video, card and word games may
serve as an outlet for their
combative tendencies. When Aug. 5
people 'explore in anger, it is not at
all pleasant to watch; it is worse yet
to be the target of their rage.
Usually, however,-the more highly
evolved born on this day become
aware of the damage, both physical
and psychological, that their anger
inflicts, and evolve to a higher stage
of consciousness in their 30s and
40s. Those born on this day may
suffer for many years before
learning how to relate to loved ones
in a truly caring way.
Aug. 5 people need the freedom
to act quickly, to carry out decisions
without constraint. Therefore, they
must retain a measure of
independence and individual
initiative even in a group setting.
This is not to suggest that those
born on this day are unco-operative
or difficult to work with; it is just
that they are happiest when leading.
Gentleness and kindness ultimately
prove very important to the dynamic
people born on this day. Perhaps
touched by the consideration and
generosity of an important figure in
their youth, they will so admire that
person that they seek to honour or
even emulate them. In their early
years, they are usually preoccupied
with intense desires and passions.
As time passes, they realize the
importance of affection and begin to
express it openly and unashamedly.
A bit rough around the edges, Aug.
5 people will mellow as they
approach old age. Those who are
cantankerous may become quite
lovable.
