ports Blyth Atom Is end successful season
Close
When the Walton Brewers met Saltford not many calls
went their way as they lost this B division contest,
Saturday in the annual Men's Fastball Invitational
tournament in Brussels. The Monkton players were the
big winners taking this years A championship title.

It was a swing and a miss for this batter during the heated
play in Blyth on Saturday afternoon for the annual co-ed
tournament. Two teams from Blyth were the competitiors
in this B division contest.
The Blyth I Atom soccer team
had a successful season this year
with five wins, one tie and five
losses. The team was coached by
April VanAmersfoort, assisted by
Steve Cook.
There were 21 members on the
team. The main goalie was Daniel
Depatie. He surprised the team over
and over again with some of his
spectacular saves.
The fullback line consisted of
Blake Hesselwood, Devin Jenkins,
Justin Dobie, Amanda Bearss,
Brittany Peters and Nicholas
Packer. They had their work cut out
for them in some games and did an
excellent job. Their free kicks and
the ability to get the ball out of the
Blyth end of the field improved a
lot as the season wore on.
The half-back line was consistent
throughout the entire season. It was
made up of Sean Bechtel, Kerissa
VanAmersfoort, Cassandra Uyl,
Tony Bean, Stephanie Archambault
and Kaitlyn Toll. After the throw-
After an 11-6 victory over Brus-
sels the Walton Squirt Girls lost to
an overpowering Wingham team,
July 28.
While Wingham counted 14
crossing the plate, the hosts man-
aged only five.
In the first inning a walk to Crys-
tal Gibbons put the first Walton
player on board, then a single to
Jen McClure moved her on. A walk
to Michelle Cook loaded the bases.
Jessica Lubbers was hit by a pitch,
Tuesday, July 28 the Brussels
Dynamites shut out Listowel 1.
Passing and hard kicking gave
the Dynamites a 13-0 win. Star
players were Cody Subject with six
goals, and Ryan Smith with three.
Effective positioning gave two
goals to Brianne Wheeler, one to
Evan Ducharme, and Justin Pipe
who scored his first goal of the
season.
Helping on defense were
Nicholas Durrell, Emily Warwick,
Danica Zwep and Brian Burgess.

It was a great finish to regular
season play for the Belgrave Pee-
Wee Girls, July 28, when they trav-
elled to Listowel. The visitors came
out on top of a 13-9 contest.
It was a tough battle with the two
teams neck and neck for the first
three innings. Then a three-run
fourth for Belgrave at the top and a
shutout, capped by a fantastic catch
from Jenni Hopf for the final out, in
the bottom, gave them the win.
Sherri Ross hit a homer in the
first inning, cashing in two RBIs to
show their hosts they meant busi-
ness.
Lisa Black pitched most of the
game, fanning eight, while Hopf
came in to relieve her for the first
part of the second inning.

ins were perfected and the positions
mastered they were not to be
messed with.
The forward line was made up of
Tassi and Jake Edwards, Jim
Ritchie, Darcey Cook, Brett Bean,
Adam Young, Lucas Egli and
Jenna Rinn. The forwards never
ceased to amaze with their speed.
They had some beautiful
professional passing happening on
the offense.
The year-end tournament was
held in Clinton on July 21 - 25.
Blyth was matched against Clinton
Navy. Blyth pulled ahead in the
first half with goals by Ritchie
assisted by Young and Cook
assisted by a throw-in from
VanAmersfoort. They managed to
hold the lead and win the game 2-0.
Next was against Goderich Big
V. They played an aggressive game
and won 5-0. The goal scorers were
Cook, Young, Bechtel and Egli
with assists going to Rinn,
VanAmersfoort, Egli and Bechtel.
This advanced them to play on
bringing home Gibbons.
Sarah McDonald and Melissa
Souch both walked and scored in
the second inning.
In the third, Cook struck out, but
beat the throw to first after the
catcher dropped the ball. A walk to
Mandy Mitchell and some good
base stealing by both resulted in
both girls coming home.
Melissa Beuermann also got on
base having been hit by a pitch.

ular season.
night in net.
Dynamites played their last game
in Newry on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Saturday, July 25. They were
matched against Clinton
Marauders, a tough team. They
played hard but Clinton took the
lead and held on. Bechtel scored
near the end assisted by Egli and B.
Bean to make the final score 4-1.
This put Blyth out of the
tournament.
The Blyth I team had a great
season and a lot of fun. They are
grateful to parents and fans who
came out to the games to cheer
them on. It is always great to have
fan support.
Another year of soccer is finished
for the Blyth Atoms and with new
techniques learned and abilities
expanded they are excited for
another season.

It was another big score as Blyth
Mites hosted Varna, July 30. The
home team came up on the winning
side of the 21-14 final.
Starting pitcher was Anthony
Peters, who caught some come-
backers for the first two outs. The
final out was made by Jeff Elliott
on first. The visitors managed three
runs in between.
In the home half, a single to
Blake Hesselwood started things
off. He was thrown out at second.
Justin Rinn then walked, followed
by a homer off the bat of Darcey
Cook. Back-to-back walks to Ben-
jamin Caldwell and Nick Dale put
two on for an Eric Caldwell single.
Peters doubled, then was left
stranded on second. A total of five
runs crossed the plate.
Things got scary in the second
innings, when the visitors scored
eight, while shutting down the
homeside. The only one to get on
base was Elliott, who walked, then
was left standing at third.
Cook came in in relief of Peters
part way through the inning.
The hit parade continued with
seven Blyth runners coming home.
Cook led off with a triple, then was
singled home by Eric Caldwell,
who in turn came home on a Peters
double. A single to Derek Young-
blut, a walk to Adam Dale and a
single to Hesselwood brought in
Peters. A base-on-balls to Elliott
and some heads-up running had
him crossing the plate before the
final out.
It was one on both sides for the
fourth inning, with Eric Caldwell
the lone Blyth scorer, who was
brought home after singling by a
Peters triple.
The visitors were kept to two in
the fifth inning, while there was a
resurgence in Blyth's offense.
Seven runners scored to give them
a solid victory.
