Brussels Livestock report
Dominion Meat Packers buys steer at $102.25
The sales at Brussels Livestock
for the week ending July 24 were:
fed cattle, 546, cows, 183; veal and
bob calves, 377; lambs and goats,
283; stockers, 805.
The fed steers and heifers traded
at steady prices. Cows sold $2
higher. Veal sold $2 higher. Lambs
were selling on a steady trade. All
classes of stockers sold on a strong
active market.
There were 325 steers on offer
selling from $87 to $90 to the high
of $102.25. Sixty-seven steers
consigned by Cunningham Farms,
Lucan, averaging 1,376 lbs. sold
for an average of $89.93 with a
blonde steer weighing 1,255 lbs.

There's more to the International
Plowing Match (IPM) than
plowing.
When the plowing and farm
machinery show comes to Huron
County in September 1999, some
of the area's finest quilts will be on
display with a special competition.
The IPM Quilt Block Challenge,
Quilt Competition and Quilt Show
will be held on April 8 - 11 at the
South Huron Recreation Centre in

Soybean farmers are seeing the
flowers drop to the ground as the
plants do not have enough moisture
to build a pod.
There have been concerns that
1998 may replicate the conditions
of the serious drought of 1988.
One farmer told Humphries, "the
more he walks in the field, the
more cracks he sees. He hasn't seen
this many cracks in 10 years."
On the up side, most of the win-
ter wheat crop and straw was har-
vested without rainfall, providing a
good quality crop with low rates of
disease,
Moisture content has averaged
around 14 per cent, with good mass
and yields of 75 to 85 bushels per
acre, said Humphries.

selling from $87 to $90 to the high
of $95. Nineteen heifers consigned

averaging 1,213 lbs. sold for an
average of $88.66 with a black
heifer weighing 1,130 lbs. selling
to Highland Packers for $95. Nine
heifers consigned by Ephriam
Hoover, Wroxeter, averaging 1,091
lbs. sold for an average of $88.56
with sales to $94. Sixteen heifers
consigned by Hugh Love, Atwood,
averaging 1,190 lbs. sold for an
average of $88.20 with sales to

Twenty-one heifers consigned by
Ralph Eyre, Courtright, averaging
1,108 lbs. sold for an average of
$88.58 with a limousin heifer
selling to Clark Bros. for $91.75.
Fourteen heifers consigned by Mux
Lea Farms, Woodstock, averaging
1,234 lbs. sold for an average of
$88.46 with sales to $91.25. Seven
heifers consigned by Ron McClure,
Walton, averaging 1,131 lbs. sold
for an average of $85.67 with sales
to $90.
Fifteen heifers consigned by
Exeter.
Quilters are being invited to take
part in this competition and show
by entering items in one or more of
the nine categories which include
mini wall hanging, pieced quilt,
appliqued quilt, creative quilt,
miniature quilt, wearable art. There
will be first, second and third prize
money in each category, with first
prizes offering as much as $125 in
eight categories.
The ninth category is The Old
Mill - Bainton's Old Mill Special
which asks for a crazy quilt using a
wool ball. The winning entrant will
receive $700 and the quilt will
become the property of The Old
Mill in Blyth.
The winning quilt entries will be
on display at the IPM when it is
held in Dashwood in Sept. 21-25,
1999.
Registration deadline is Jan. 15
and quilts must be completed by
April 2.
Dolores Shapton of Exeter is the
chairperson of the quilt committee.
She noted that the committee has
spent considerable time developing
the categories and the requirements.
As well, a special addition to the
IPM for quilters is the Quilt Block
Competition. This competition asks
quilters to create a block design
depicting their interpretation of
Huron County and using the IPM
theme - Huron Shines in '99.

averaging 1,269 lbs. sold for an
average of $87.96 with sales to
$89.60. One blonde heifer con-
signed by Irvin Schenk, Petersburg,
weighing 1,340 lbs. sold for $87.
Two heifers consigned by Joe
Semple, Ethel, averaging 1,327 lbs.
sold for an average of $86.76 with
sales to $87.
There were 183 cows on offer
selling: D1 and D2 sold $54 to $58
to the high of $74; D3, $50 to $54;
D4, $45 to $50. Two charolais
cows consigned by Jerome Zettler,
Walkerton, averag-ing 1,398 lbs.
sold for an average of $66.19 with
sales to $74. One limousin cow
consigned by Roy Peam, Mitchell,
weighing 1,700 lbs. sold for
$71.50. Three holstein cows
consigned by Peter Fransen,
Bluevale, averaging 1,290 lbs. sold
for an average of $62.36 with sales
to $68.50.
There were 9 bulls on offer
selling from $66.50 to $73 to the
high of $87.50. One limousin bull
consigned by Queen's Bush
Limousin, Walkerton, weighing
1,960 lbs. sold for $73. One blonde
bull consigned by Hazel Beuerman,
Dublin, weighing 2,125 lbs. sold
for $71.50.
There were 284 veal on offer
selling from: Beef sold $80 to
$133; Holstein, $70 to $84; Plain
Holstein, $50 to $70. Eight veal
consigned by Decroft Farms Ltd.,
Clinton, averaging 711 lbs. sold for
an average of $118.27 with sales to
$133. Three veal consigned by
Richard Horst, Listowel, averaging
693 lbs. sold for an average of
$129.73 with sales to $132. Two
veal consigned by Bellera
Holsteins, Auburn, averaging 713
lbs. sold for an average of $117.55
with sales to $131.
Lambs, 50 to 80 lbs. sold
$112.50 to $156; 80 - 95 lbs., $109

Sheep sold $55 to $97.50.
Entry forms and fees for the
block competition' must be received
by Nov. 3. Finished blocks must be
received by Jan. 15.
The winning blocks will be put
together to create two special quilts
and a wall hanging for the IPM
which will then be raffled.
Participants in the Quilt Block
Challenge may create pieced,
appliqued or a combination of both.
Prizes will be awarded for the best
five quilt blocks.
