For Teens, By Teens
Television violence not creating problem
By Ashley Gropp
I just finished reading a horror
book by Dean Koontz. I also just
heard someone blame books,
movies and television shows for
youth violence.
You very often hear about kids
'copycatting' the things they see on
TV and in movies. Boys a couple
of years ago would kick and punch
each other claiming to be their
favourite "Mighty Morphine Power
Ranger."
If you're going to blkme anything
for acts of insanity, don't blame it
all on what we see and hear. Peo-
ple have always had problems with
controlling violence - even before
the invention of television.
The Power Rangers, and the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
before them, are not necessarily the
cause of these violent outbursts in
By Erin Roulston
Recently I saw a list of the "One
Hundred Greatest American
Movies of all time." Of them I had
seen maybe 12.
I decided that I should make a
version of this list for teenagers. I
got a list of 450 movies and asked
10 of my friends between the ages
of 13 and 19 to pick out their
favourites.
Now I know that 10 friends does
not an accurate survey make, but
this will have to do. If you have a
serious complaint, please write to
me and let me know.
(P.S. The Number One Movie on
the list of the "One Hundred
Greatest American Movies of. all
Time" Citizen Kane hadn't even
been seen by any of the people I
surveyed).

kids. They are, however, some-
thing the kids could relate their nat-
ural violent urges to.
I don't see anything wrong with
kids watching shows like these
which show people fighting to save
other people as long as they under-
stand violence is not acceptable in
everyday situations. Teaching them
is about communication
When the latest hit movie is a
thriller, the teen violence rates do
not jump massive amounts, despite
that teens are considered to be a
highly impressionable age group.
No more teens commit violent acts
than any other time, except that
there is sometimes the odd one who
copies certain violent acts from that
movie. These are always blown up
in the media, saying that the youth
was simply corrupt from watching
such acts on television.
These youths were not corrupted
simply from watching one too
many scary movies. Although they
may have gotten some of their
ideas from watching them, they
were obviously disturbed before
that. Most teenagers who watch
that type of film watch them for
entertainment and do not model
their lives after the villain.
I am attracted to some horror
stuff, myself. I wouldn't say that
I'm a maniacal killer on the loose
because of it. I just happen to find
certain aspects of Dean Koontz's
books and Wes Craven's movies
fascinating.
I know I'm not alone, since
Koontz is a best-selling author and
Craven's films (such as Scream and
I Know What You Did Last
Summer) are often the movies that
'everyone', at least in the teenage
Crowd, is going to see. Can we all
be psychotic?
