S ports Barracudas swim to medals at Goderich meet, Saturday The Brussels Tigers suffered their first loss of the Huron County fastball season at the hands of the Goderich Dukes. The final score was 2-1. Goderich touched Tiger starter Doug Conley for two runs in the first, putting together two hits, an error and two walks. The Tigers cut the lead in half in the top of the third, as Steve Fritz singled and came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher. After that pitching and strong defense took over. Brussels had a chance to win the game in the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out. Doug Shaw lofted a fly ball to left. Fritz tagged at third and was cut down at the plate by a perfect throw. The Tigers erased a one-run Dog lead in the top of the first on a three run homer by Fritz, then erupted for six more in the second off Bulldog starter Dave Smith. The Tigers counted four more in their next at bat and cruised the rest of the way to a 13-4 win. Conley again went all the way for the Tigers whiffing eight Bulldogs. Next action for the Tigers is Wednesday as they travel to Goderich and Friday night at 9 p.m. at home against Lieury. They travel to Exeter Sunday for their first clash with the Braves. Miller doubled and singled and Nick Halley had three singles. Chris Holmes, Chris Regele and Wolfe each had base hits. That game brought the team's season record to eight wins and four losses. The following night Walton was edged by Belmore at home 9-8. The big highlight of the game came in the final inning when Blake Miller nailed a grand slam homer to bring them within one, but the seven-run per inning rule prevented them from going for the win. The Brussels Barracudas had a great start to their swimming season on Saturday, July 18 in Goderich. First place in the nine/10 category went to Brent Wheeler for the front crawl and butterfly. The front crawl relay team of Colleen Aitchison, Corey Chapman, Brent Wheeler, Christopher Jutzi also took first place. In the same category Brent Wheeler came second in the back crawl. In the 11/12 group, Tyler Jutzi got second in back crawl. Chase Chapman, Ryan Jutzi, Tommy Cronin, Krista Richmond were second in the front crawl relay for the age category of eight and under 100 m. also second in the 200 m. front relay for the 11/12 category were Jessica Spink, Katie Aitchison, Brook Wheeler and Nicole White. Bringing home third place were Chase Chapman, back crawl, eight and under, Christopher Jutzi, back crawl, nine/10; Drew Thomas, back crawl, 11/12; Matt Elliott, front crawl, 13/14; Chase Chapman, breast stroke, eight and under; relay, 100 m., Briane Wheeler, Mary Ann Aitchison, Lauren Spink, Candice Ross, nine/10. Fourth place awards went to Chase Chapman, front crawl, eight and under; Richard Goetz, back crawl, 11/12; Shayna Park-Shaw, back crawl, nine/10. Earning fifth place were: Tommy Cronin, back crawl, eight and under; Colleen Aitchison, back crawl, eight and under; Mary Ann Aitchsion, front crawl, nine/10; Colleen Aitchison, breast stroke, eight and under, Matt Elliott, breast stroke, 13/14; Nicole White, fly, 11/12; Cory Chapman, breast stroke, eight and under. Sixth place went to Tommy Cronin and Colleen Aitchison for front crawl, eight and under. Also taking second was the boys' open crawl 200 m. relay with Matt Elliott, Amy Ross, Nicole Lowe and Brittany Kellington. Total team,points were 123. Coach Amy Crawford expressed her gratitude to all the parents and team members for their help throughout the day. "Congratulations to the team members who gave their all in the events," she added. Atom Its end season Blyth Atom II soccer season has come to an end. It was a very exciting season with four wins, three ties and 3 losses. Goals were scored by Duane Buffinga with 40, Danny Cullens with four, Josh De Gans and Krystopher Campbell with three each, Lisa Carter with two and Katie Irving, Lauren Bouman, Jacob Rouw, and Donnie Williamson all with one. Assists were earned by: Jacob Rouw, Josh De Gans, Lisa Carter, Stacy McLellan, Danny Cullens, Mike Elliot, Charlotte Worsell, Dakota Riley, Darren and Lauren Bouman, Rebecca and Nathan Schultz, Krystopher Campbell and Donnie Williamson. Main goaltenders were: Josh De Gans and Danny Cullens with relief by Jonathan Linker and Stacy McLellan. The annual tournament is this week from July 22 - 25 in Clinton. Crawling back A Brussels Barracuda shows top form competing in the back crawl at a meet in Goderich this past Saturday afternoon. The swim team performed very well, bringing home several firsts.
