Brussels council briefs
Min. of the Env. seeks repayment of grant
Brussels village council is
waiting to hear from Howick
regarding police coverage.
It was noted at the July 6 meeting
of council that if Howick opts to
stay with OPP then is is likely the
cost for Wingham Police Services
would increase.

Clerk-Treasurer Donna White
said that the owners of several of
the properties owing back taxes
have paid. However, the one on
Mill Street next to Brian and Isabel
White will be registered for tax
sale.
White said she had contacted the
county about the village paying the
tax as it costs $1,000 to register.
However, she was told that no
other municipality does that. "They
said at some point the village has to
let it go. The property is of little
use to anyone but neighbouring
landowners.

Brian Treble from the planning
department had looked at the
property on Catherine Street owned
by Curtis Gardner, which had been
offered to the village. He said it
was not suitable for a mobile home
or other building.
However, White told council,
that he had suggested Gardner
contact neighbouring landowners to
see if they were interested in
acquiring it to add to their property.
He also said it might be possible
to buy land from the neighbours to
make the Gardner property big
enough to build on. This would,
however, mean the cost of a
severance fee.
White said the Gardners had

PUC wire
On July 8 the manager of the
Brussels PUC reported a theft.
Police said that between June 30
and July 3, $800 worth of
aluminum underground electrical
wire was found stolen. The wire
was left behind the PUC shed in an
outside compound.

Many years ago, the village
received an engineering grant of
$23,000 for a sludge storage tank.
White said that $9,000 was spent
and the Ministry of the
Environment was now requesting
the unused grant money back.
This had been kept in a separate
account.

amount of $13,956.88.

A letter of support was approved
for the Wingham Hospital's
obstetrics department expansion.

Josling told council that he would
like a recommendation made
asking the county to take over
completely on-site sewage
A Grey Twp. farmer, self-taught
musician and member of the leg-
endary CKNX Barn Dance was
honoured posthumously for his
contributions at a ceremony in
Monkton recently.
Archie Mann, born at RR1,
Monkton, Conc. 16 of Grey Twp.,
near Moncrieff was given the Barn
Dance Historical Society Pioneers
Award.
Well-known for his fiddling and
bagpipe playing, Mann joined Don
Robertson and The Ranch Boys in
the 1940s.
As a Ranch Boy, he was teamed
inspections for this year.

Building permits were issued to
Roger Dilworth, Max McLellan
and Ken Cousins for sun decks.

Josling informed council that
there had been a number of
instances in the village where
people were proceeding with
construction projects, particularly
sundecks, without having applied
for permits. He stressed that a
permit is required for any building
bigger than 108 square feet.

After receiving the road
superintendent's report regarding
the number of T-intersections in the
village which do not have stop
signs, Councillor Greg Wilson
agreed to investigate further to
prioritize.

In order to accommodate office
with fiddler Rossie Mann (no rela-
tion) as the group travelled to dance
halls as often as five nights a week.
Even after leaving the band,
Mann continued to delight audi-
ences with his music.
He was inducted into the Fiddle
Country Heritage Club in 1990.
Mann was also a long-time mem-
ber of the Brussels Pipe Band.
Son Bob Mann of Clinton and
daughter-in-law Mary Beth Mann,
accepted the award on behalf of
Mr. Mann, which was presented by
Earl Heywood, a performer with
Barn Dance.

Light touch
It was difficult to decide whether or not you wanted to win
or take a good soaking as the participants in The Ark's
Junior Summer Recreation Program played a water
balloon relay on a hot, hot Monday afternoon. The
program, geared to children from Grades 1-5 is running
every weekday but Thursday, beginning at 10 a.m. Pre-
registration is not required.
