This year, as in the past three, we have once again earned the United Nations designation of being the best place in the world in which to live. I have said it before and I will say it again; there is no place that exemplifies the aforementioned qualities like right here in Huron- Bruce. Our strong agricultural background is a characteristic upon which the country was founded. Our peaceful and quiet surroundings are coveted by others and serve as a source of pride for all within, our boundaries. Over the past year we have continued to make tremendously productive contributions to the global community. Among other things, we enjoyed the honour of hosting world leaders in Ottawa for the formal signing ceremony of our international ban on the use of antipersonnel landmines and we expanded our support for human rights enhancement in foreign countries through an increasingly proactive role in organizations such as NATO and the United Nations. Domestically we have once again started to celebrate together. This year we formally commenced our Millennium preparations and we saw our financial picture dramatically improve as we achieved a balanced budget for the first time in over a generation. As a result, our exports government's mismanagement of the education funding formula and the fallout from Bill 160 the board has threatened to unilaterally change the conditions of employment of high school teachers," said Cliff Berry, chair of the Teachers' Negotiating Team, District 8, of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF). "The timing of this action has been necessitated by Bill 160 which terminates the current collective agreement on Aug. 31 and forces teachers to negotiate a new first contract." "The strong strike vote reflects the commitment and resolve of public high school teachers to protect the quality of education for students in public high schools of Huron and Perth Counties," said Ken Robins, local negotiator with OSSTF, District 8, Avon Maitland. "The board's plans will seriously harm the learning conditions and opportunities for students and reduce extra-curricular activities and the opportunities for teachers to provide individual assistance to their students." "The teachers' negotiating team is ready to continue negotiations throughout the summer and sincerely hope that a fair collective agreement can be reached which protects the learning conditions in our schools," said Berry. OSSTF, District 8, Avon Maitland, represents 505 public high school teachers employed by the Avon Maitland District School Board. have increased and our interest and inflation rates continue to remain extremely low. Indeed, as in the past 130 years, Canadians again have much to celebrate this year. Our determination and conviction serve as an inspiration and example to the world of the fact that Canada is a capable and compassionate member of the community of nations. As Canadians we should be proud of our achievements and confident in our future together . . . Once again, I would extend my best wishes, for the future, to each and every one of my fellow Canadians. Sincerely, Paul Steckle, M.P. The Avon Maitland District School Board announces that its two administrative properties in Stratford have been sold to two separate Ontario numbered companies. The board understands that the planned uses for the sites at 210 Water Street (sale price $865,000) and 426 Britannia Street (sake price $215,000) will conform with existing municipal zoning bylaws. It is anticipated that all board operations in the two sites will be relocated by mid-November. At a special meeting of the board on Wednesday, June 24, the board approved the relocation of its business, human resources and operations departments to the lower level at Seaforth District High School. The renovations at Seaforth have already begun and will be completed by the end of October. The board's administration will immediately begin planning for the MP says Candians have much to celebrate
