SETTING THE STAGE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24, 1998. Glass brings a taste of the past to Blyth theatre By Allison Lawlor T wo of Joanna McClelland Glass' works are being given a second life this year. Joanna is known to theatre audiences across Canada and the U.S. Her play, Play Memory won a Tony nomination in 1984. Her play Yesteryear was first produced in 1989 by the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto. The play was originally performed with a cast of 10 and two, lavish sets. Two years ago Joanna began extensive re-writes, she changed close to 30 per cent of the script and cut one of the sets. The changes made the play cheaper to produce. After the Blyth Festival, Yesteryear will be performed in Ontario and Manitoba. Joanna's second re-birth is of her novel, Woman Wanted. The book was first published in 1984 (St. Martin's Press). Twelve years ago, Warner Brothers had the screenplay of the book and was ready to start filming, unfortunately, the project fell through. The screenplay has been revived and filming begins this summer. Woman Wanted, will star Kiefer Sutherland, Holly Hunter and Michael Moriarity. The film will be produced with a small budget by an independent company. Part of it will be shot inWinnipeg. Born in Saskatoon, Joanna said she never forgot her prairie roots. "I used to spend summers on a wheat farm with my mother's family." By Allison Lawlor irecting is just one of the many things David Ferry Ddoes. He'll' be directing the musical comedy, Hot Flashes by Paul Ledoux and John Roby this season at the Blyth Festival. Primarily an actor, David works in television, film and radio as much as he does on stage. He was nominated for a Gemini Award for his work as Stuart McCrea in last season's Road to Avonlea and he won a Nellie Award for best radio performance in the CBC radio, mystery series, Midnight Cab. David likes working with Paul Ledoux and John Roby. "I'm working with such an experienced writer and musician," he said. David directed Paul's musical comedy, Cheatin' Hearts at the Bluewater Summer Theatre and has performed in some of his other musicals. David also performed some of John Roby's musical pieces in Old Man's Band at the DuMaurier Theatre in Toronto. Born in Newfoundland, David grew up in St. John's. He still owns land on "the rock" and said he misses home. David went on to study acting at the National Theatre School in Montreal. Since then he has worked at most of the large theatres across the country including Stratford. In addition to acting and directing, David teaches regularly at theatre schools such as, George Brown and the National Theatre School. He is also the past vice-president external of Canadian Actors' Equity Association and has served as national chair of Actra Performers' Guild. David's most recent stage credits include playing lago in Othello for Joanna acted in amateur theatre in Saskatchewan as a kid and wanted to be an actress until she was 22. She got a scholarship to study theatre in the U.S. During this time she quickly realized she didn't have the personality to deal with the constant rejection actors are subject to. She started writing for the theatre instead. Since then she has lived in California, Connecticut, Michigan, Washington, D.C. and her plays have been performed throughout Canada, the U.S. and around the world. Over 20 years ago one of her first plays, Artichoke was performed at the Blyth Festival. At the time she said she had no idea where Blyth was. Joanna is excited to have Yesteryear performed at the Blyth Festival. - "I write in a rather refined kind of language. The language is slightly elevated," she said. "The play isn't just farcical, I think people in Blyth will get a kick out of it." Toronto has been home to Joanna for the past nine years. She isn't sure whether she will stay in Canada or head back south of the border. Her three children live in the U.S. But no matter where she is, Joanna will continue writing for the theatre. "I love the theatre because I guess we are in peril. What an antique idea it is to get people to go to see live theatre," she said with a laugh. "What we do is the Lovers and Madmen Company in Toronto and King Leontes in Shakespeare's Winter's Tale at Centaur Theatre in Montreal. Last year he filmed Glory and Honour (Turner Broadcasting), on Baffin Island and in Montreal. David and his wife, Kyra Harper, recently finished filming Love on the Land (CBS), in which they played husband and wife. David will be at the Lighthouse Theatre in Port Dover for most of July where Hot Flashes runs before coming to Blyth. Most of the year, David lives in Toronto with his wife. Joanna McClelland Glass: award- same thing they did in Greece 2,000 years ago." Cadranel will sing in the Garage Theatre / nga Cadranel's first performing role was in an industrial show in Los Angeles, where she played a fat molecule at age six. Audiences will see her perform as Ally in Hot Flashes this season at the Blyth Festival. Inga recently returned from studying theatre at Studio 58 in Vancouver.
