As the June 26 Opening Night
draws nearer, a stellar company of
theatre professionals is gathering in
the village of Blyth which hosts a
Festival of Canadian plays each
summer. In addition to the many
faces recognized from the Blyth
stage, the Festival will welcome a
number of talented newcomers to
its cast.
Blyth's 24th season will open
with Yesteryear by Joanne
McCelland Glass, directed by Paul
Lampert who mounted last year's
Quiet in the Land. The cast of this
delightful retro-comedy is headed
by distinguished actors Ross
Manson and Jane Spidell, both of
who are making their Blyth debut
as well as a familiar face, Michelle
Fisk, who last appeared on the
Blyth stage 1989.
In Yesteryear Manson plays a
humble house painter who attempts
to reunite with a lost love. Sharon
Bakker, who won hearts last
season, returns to play the socialist
'madam' who bedevils the town
brass.
Long-time Blyth favourite Tom
Hauff is elected to two offices this
season. He plays both the Mayor of
Yesteryear's fictional town of
Raglan as well as the ambitious
businessman turned Mayor of
Winstead in Keith Roulston's
contemporary comedy Jobs, Jobs,
Jobs. Ari Cohen (The Melville
Boys) returns to create the role of
Billy Bob, a Texas millionaire who
may or may not, provide the
economic miracle all small towns
need.
Jobs, Jobs, Jobs is directed by
Blyth's Associate Artist, the ever
popular Jerry Franken. Franken
will also appear in Yesteryear.
Diana Belshaw, who Blyth
patrons will remember from her
many appearances here in the
1980s, is rejoining the company to
direct Thirteen Hands, a play by
one of Canada's most honoured
authors, Carol Shields. This warm
and witty portrait of women around
the card table is designed by
Blyth's ever inventive, Shawn
Kerwin and Lesley Wilkinson.
Other well known designers
dressing the Blyth stage this
summer include Yvonne Sauriol,
Allan Stichbury, Bonnie Beecher
and Victoria Wallace.
