Glasses result in inconvenience, discomfort
By Amy Crawford
When I think of wearing glasses I
remember how many times I went
to scratch around my eyes and poke
my glasses. I also remember taking
them off, setting them somewhere
and not being able to find them
again. Sometimes I even went as far
as having to ask someone if they
had seen my glasses and was met
with the response, "They're on your
head."

GEMINI
It's not a good idea to tell everyone
everything. Part of knowing how to
communicate is in knowing what not
to say, and when not to say it.
You're attracting a lot of attention,
and not all of it is positive. To be on
the safe side, review your output
before it gets out, rather than after.
Somebody who's asking a lot of
questions may not have your best
interests at heart. Dispense
information on a "need-to-know"
basis.
CANCER
If your sweetheart is stressed out,
be compassionate. Nobody can
understand better than you can.
Nobody can soothe an upset
disposition better than you can,
either. Gentle sounds and sweet
aromas help, as would a favourite
meal for two. In private, of course.
LEO
You may be stuck at home again
today, but that's OK. You can finish
up a project you've already started.
This is a relatively good day for
working in the yard. If you also want
to get together with friends, no
problem. Have them over to your
place.
VIRGO
A talkative person, possibly a
Gemini, may attempt to interrupt
you. Just be polite but firm. You can
discuss whatever it is later. Actually,
you can do something to prevent
interruptions from happening. You
can turn the volume on all your
telephone ringers to "off". This is not
cheating; it is simply defending your
privacy.
LIBRA
Take it slow and easy again today.
You have a few decisions to make.
and there's quite a bit of money
involved. In other words, it's time to
go shopping for groceries.
Once the chores are done, you have
permission to zip across town to visit
a dear friend. You have lots to talk
about so plan to spend the evening.
SCORPIO
The competition's fierce, but you're
strong. You're the one who has
endurance. The other person may be
faster in the 100-yard dash, but
you're the long-distance runner. That
perseverance is going to help you
win, eventually. Keep that in mind if
you start to feel confused. Don't
forget to give a loved one special
attention. It will empower you both.
SAGITTARIUS
There's lots you would LIKE to do,
but something you HAVE to do takes
precedence. Your mate will
understand once you explain that it's
a matter of principles. It might be
nothing more significant than
cleaning out the garage, but if you
promised, you promised. Better do it.
CAPRICORN
There's work to be done, and it
probably involves your friends. If
also resulted in some eyeglass folly.
My glasses were occasionally bent
and/or broken as the result of a
baseball heading on a line drive
straight for my nose.
It was because of these many
reasons I resolved to buy contacts.
Although both glasses and
contacts help you to sec, contacts
are better. Contacts aren't big
objects resting on your nose, but
translucent, rounded structures that
rest right on your eyes. This makes
you can't think of anything, just call
some of them and ask. It might be
nothing serious. It's more likely fun.
You tend to do the serious stuff first,
and forget the fun altogether. You
can think about (and maybe solve) a
work-related problem on your way to
and from the party.
AQUARIUS
Although you're in a pretty good
mood, a stressful situation could
develop between you and an older
person. This individual seems
determined to cramp your style.
Don't make too big a fuss in public.
Just do what is required, and get
outta there.
Sneak away with a person you love
to a place where you can talk freely.
Together you'll find a way around
even the most difficult situations.
PISCES
It looks like people are coming
over to your house, or it's all messed
up for some other reason. Travel to,
near, or by water looks pretty good.
It's likely to be more peaceful and
quiet than staying home if you want
to rest your brain as well as your
body.
It looks like there's some sort of
hassle going on at your house. You
can help solve the problem
tomorrow. Today, do something else.
ARIES
Conditions are better for paying off
old debts than for incurring new
ones. Keep that in mind if you go
shopping. You will probably spend
more than you can afford, but you
need to do that every once in a while
just to get the adrenaline pumping.
Now find a way to make more
money soon. For some people,
playing the game this way would be
too stressful, but for you it's exciting.
TAURUS
There are a lot of things you want
to buy, so budgeting is crucial. Let
your date pick up the tab today, and
don't even worry about it. You're
probably going where he or she
wants anyway. You would have
preferred to stay at home on the
couch, right?
the whole seeing process more
comfortable, especially for my nose
which had been the object of many
hard knocks.
If you have ever gone from a nice
warm house to the outside on a cold
winter day you will find your
glasses fogging up. This situation
constantly forces you to take your
glasses off and wipe them. This
wonderful scenario means the
eyeglass wearer must bring at least
one box of Kleenex with them
everywhere during the winter
months.
When it rains it is quite easy to
spot the many glass-wearers. They
are usually glancing around with a
crusty look on their face,
periodically removing their glasses
By Ashley Gropp
Imagine being a teacher at one of
our local high schools. One day, only
about a quarter of your students both-
er to show up for classes. This is
likely because it is 'National Skip
Day', a 'holiday' celebrated by stu-
dents all over the country. This year
it was held Friday, June 5.
The day is a pain for teachers for
several reasons. One is that it is diffi-
cult to work a schedule around.
Many classes already require more.
time to complete the mandatory work
without students missing school for
unnecessary and frivolous reasons.
Unless there is an independent study
work period in class, students who do
show up have little to do.
Even when tests are scheduled,
only half of the students generally go
to class to write it. This means that in
order to write the test, students waste
the next day of classes to write it or
they come in and write it before or
after school. Nobody wants to work
overtime, so why should the teachers
be expected to because students don't
go to class? Not only that, but it
means that the tests can't be marked
over the weekend and handed back
Monday.
This annoys the students who
wrote the test when they should have,
as well as the teacher, who may not
have the time to mark them during
the week.
Also, either the students get away
with their truancy, or an already very
busy vice principal and office staff
have a long and hectic couple of
days, possibly having to neglect oth-
ers who come into the office requir-
ing assistance or have been
misbehaving.
The funny thing about skip day is
that many students don't enjoy it.
They do nothing all day but skate-
board, watch TV, or just drink.
There are those who spend the day
and wiping the rain off. This
constant annoyance often leads to
the removal of their glasses and a
wish to toss the darn things in the
garbage if they have to wipe them
off one more time.
Although both cost a lot of
money, in the long run it is far
easier to maintain and care for your
contacts than your glasses which are
easily bent, broken and scratched.
Both glasses and contacts come in
an array of colours, but only
contacts will allow you to change
your eye colour. Believe me, this is
much easier than a corny squiggly
pattern around the frame of your
glasses.
After a few years of wearing
glasses you will notice big unsightl'
productively, working or doing
school work, but the majority slack
off. The slackers have been heard
talking about how slowly the day is
going.
Believe it or not, there are quite a
few students who chose to spend
their day off hanging around the
school. Whether they are in the
smoking area, wandering the halls or
skating around on the road, they are
causing problems. The ones in the
hall are a distraction to classes and
make the janitorial staff's job more
difficult as some leave garbage all
over the place. The skaters get in the
way of any traffic that wants to get
through. The smokers often butt out
anywhere, ignoring the garbage cans;
Students need to keep in mind that
by not going to class on skip day,
they aren't just causing grief for a
teacher they may dislike, but also for
anyone who has a group project to
work on with them, their favourite
teacher, the entire staff and the rest of
their fellow classmates.
red marks on the sides of your nos,
caused from the nose pads. It almost
looks like someone pinched your
nose the whole night before while
you were sleeping. Or else you
suffer from a constant nose bleed.
Because I have worn glasses, and
now wear contacts, I find contacts
so much easier and very beneficial
to me with my summer job as a
lifeguard. When teaching swimming
lessons I can easily play "ring
around the hot dog" with the
children (this involves dunking head
under water). I can also dive into the
pool and swim laps with the older
kids I teach.
Contacts are far better than
glasses because of cost, comfort,
effort, care, and convenience. I
would never switch back.
