From the Minister's Study
Cleansing world's messes begins with us
By Lynn Nichol
Knox Cranbrook
These particular thoughts come
less from the minister's study than
from the minister's scrubbing
brush. This morning I spent about
an hour and a half doing some
inevitable "spring cleaning" (even
though spring came early, the
spring cleaning didn't).
I was once told that ministry
wasn't real work, because it didn't
rough up your hands much. So now
I can say I must have done some
On June 28, Melville Presby-
terian Church in Brussels is
sponsoring a House Tour and
Strawberry Social Tea, from 1 -
5 p.m.
The four houses in the tour range
from Victorian to modern and the
visitors will have an opportunity to
see not only interesting homes, but
gardens as well.
The four houses include: The
Work homestead which has
mortgage papers indicating it was
built in 1896 by William and Jane
Work. The red brick was hauled in
by wagon from Henfryn and the
wood trim is from Ament's mill in
Brussels.
The Armstrong Family Farm has
been host to three houses since
1885. The present structure built in
1990, features five bedrooms, four
bathrooms, large country kitchen,
family room and laundry room. The
spacious home has gingerbread
porches sheltering the entrances.
The Cardiff farmhouse was built
in the late 1800s and has been
extensively renovated inside and
out. In 1994 a large addition was
added which reflects the needs of
the owners and their family.

burns
mortgage
It was a proud day for the con-
gregation of St. Ambrose Catholic
Church in Brussels when they cele-
brated the burning of the mortgage.
Mass was held at 11 a.m., fol-
lowed by the burning ceremony at
noon.
Parishioner John Robson says St.
Ambrose is only one of two
churches in the diocese which has
been able to pay off the mortgage
in four or five years.
Special guests at the ceremony
included Larry Brennan, business
administrator of the Diocese of
London, Brussels Reeve Ralph
Watson, Reverends Nancy and
Brad Beale of St. John's Anglican
Church, Brussels and Ken
Matthews, builder of the church.
real work, because my hands are as
rough as sandpaper.
There's something about cleaning
that's very satisfying. Real, deep
down scrubbing, that gets rid of dirt
you normally wouldn't even notice,
from all the corners you didn't even
realize were there. I love the fresh
smell when I'm finished, and I love
being able to see the progress I'm
making.
Not all work gives such visible
results. For me, cleaning is not just
satisfying, it's downright
is an historic 16-room, three-storey
mansion built in 1887, overlooking
the Maitland river and modelled
after a castle in Scotland.
The interior of the house is
designed in the "Eastlake
Movement" style with 13-foot
ceilings, fireplaces, hand-carved
oak and cherry wood, with
numerous hand-painted stained
glass windows showing birds and
flora indigenous to the area.
For many years the mansion was
a maternity hospital and many
people from Brussels and area were
therapeutic.
I came downstairs from my
scrubbing, watched the news on
television for a few minutes, and
heard about a United Nations
initiative to address the world's
massive drug problems. In the
United States alone, about $60
billion is spent each year by drug
users to buy illegal drugs.
Wiping away dust in my
bathroom suddenly seemed like a
very tiny cleaning job, compared to
cleaning up many of the messes of
born in "Dunedin". The present
owner is restoring the house and
grounds to their former grandeur.
As well, there will be a
Strawberry Social Tea, included in
the ticket price, at Melville
Presbyterian Church on William
Street which is also a building of
historical and architectural interest.
The cost per ticket is $10 with
proceeds going for the work of the
church.
Tickets may be obtained at
Brussels Variety Store or by calling

our world.
But there's no better place to start
than with ourselves. Jesus asked the
question, long ago, "Why do you
see the speck in your neighbour's
eye, but do not notice the log in
your own eye?" (Luke 6: 41).
We need to do the spring
cleaning in the house and yard, but
it never hurts to do some spring
cleaning of our lives as well. Every
so often it helps to ask ourselves,
"What is it in the way we live that
needs scrubbing?"
This type of spring cleaning can
be really satisfying, too, looking
into all the corners of our lives that
we don't usually notice and
washing away the unwanted dirt
that has built up. We don't always
get visible results, but over time
others may see the difference. And
just like when you scrub the house,
even if no one else notices, you'll
know things are cleaner.
If you ever want to hear the story
of how one man, Jesus, did the real
work of cleaning for the whole
world, and how your life can be
clean too, I invite you to attend the
church of your choice.
In the meantime, for those of you
like me who are still spring
cleaning, happy scrubbing! Melville hosts house tour
