The runner may have been safe at second on this play, but the Brussels Tigers kept the
Goderich Dukes off the bags more than on when the two teams met in Brussels on Friday
night. The Tigers are off to a hot start with their winning ways this season.

On This Day In Sports History
Legendary hitter Al "Swingin" Stankie struck out in 20 consecutive
games, leading fans to call him "Stinkin" Stankie. The cause of the
streak, Al finally confessed, was a problem at home with his air
conditioning. When the local independent Lennox dealer solved the
problem and got his home cool again, Al was back hitting homers.

Tigers continue winning ways
The Brussels Barracudas will be
kicking off their swimming season
on Saturday, June 13.
The swim team members will be
taking part in a fundraising tri-
athalon to raise money to obtain
bathing caps sporting their team
logo and their name. The team will
be swimming, biking and running
starting at 11 a.m. at the pool.
They will swim 15 laps, then
bike up past the ball diamond
heading for Tumberry Street. They
will continue west, turn left on
Elizabeth Street, then right on
Smith Street. When they reach
Turnberry they will go south to
Thomas Street, then down past the
The Brussels U 11 - B2 team is
off to a good start to the 1998
season, winning their first three
games.
Their first game, May 18, was a
close contest against the Brussels
Ulf - B3s. Steven McNichol
opened the scoring for the B2s
early in the game. Joel Hubbert
answered for the B3s and the first
half ended in a 1-1 tie. The second
half continued with exciting end-to-
end action.
Strong play at halfback by
Lindsay Malhiot helped turn the
tide in the B2s favour as they took
the lead on a penalty shot by Greg
Bowers. Bowers added an
insurance marker late in the game,
resulting in a final score of 3-1 for
the B2s.
The second week of the season
saw the Ui 1 - B2s travelling to
Newton for a game against Newton
II. The outcome of the game was
seldom in doubt as Brussels
controlled the play for most of the
match.
The B2 offence was led by Justin
Mayne who notched two goals.
Nathan Murray netted his first of
the season, overpowering the
Newton goalie with a shot from
inside the penalty area.
Other Brussels scorers were
Coming up against some strong
competition in WOAA league
action, the Brussels Bantam Boys
have tasted victory and swallowed
defeat.
After a huge loss to an overpow-
ering Chepstow team to open the
season, the boys came back on June
9 to trounce a visiting Neustadt
squad 17-1. Scott Cox, Matt
Cameron, Andrew Garland, Rob
Kerr and Phil Leger all crossed the
plate in the first.
The second inning saw Joe Pear-
son, Tom Pearson, Rob McK-
ercher, James Bank and Matt
McCall reach home.
A change in pitcher slowed the
onslaught somewhat in the third.
Garland cashed in Cameron, then
scored on a Joshua Gropp sacrifice.
Brian Oldfield got the final
inning started, reaching on an error.
He then stole second before Joe
Pearson got on board. After Tom
Pearson loaded the bases, McK-
ercher tapped a base hit for two
arena and back to the pool.
Then they will trade their bikes
in for running shoes and follow the
trail over the dam up past the
Presbyterian Church, down
Tumberry Street, turning left at the
Municipal Office and back to the
pool.
Coach Amy Crawford asks that
drivers watch out for the
participants between 11 a.m. and
12:30 p.m.
Anyone wishing to donate money
towards the swim team goal it
would be greatly appreciated.
Donations can be dropped off at the
BM & G pool during pool hours to

Mitch Blake, Andrew McDonald
and Bowers with one each.
A Newton rally in the second
half was stymied by the strong
goaltending of Doug Schnock. The
final score was 6-1 in favour of
Brussels.
On June 3 the B2s battled strong
winds, frigid temperatures and a
solid Listowel III 3 team in their
third game of the season. With the
wind at their backs in the first half,
Brussels quickly scored twice on a
goal by Mayne and a penalty kick
by Bowers. Listowel regrouped and
carried the play back to Brussels,
scoring one before the first half
ended.
With the wind to their advantage
in the second half, Listowel put on
the pressure and scared a second
goal to tie the game. A charged-up
Listowel squad was repeatedly
turned back by the B2s, in
particular the strong play of
fullback Blake.
Buoyed by the efforts of their
defence Brussels started to pressure
the Listowel goalie. Forward Blake
Griffiths had several- good chances,
ringing one off the post from close
quarters. Finally, their efforts paid
off as Bowers notched the winner.
The score ended Brussels 3,
Listowel 2.
RBIs.
With some heads-up base run-
ning T. Pearson stole home. The
final run was scored by Bank.
Kerr went the distance on the
mound, striking out 12.
The story was different in Mild-
may the following night, as excel-
lent Mildmay pitching and defense,
combined with Brussels errors to
send the boys home, whitewashed
by their hosts.
Cox and Oldfield pitched well
against formidable batters, striking
out six apiece. They were backed
by solid catching from Joe Pearson.
Key defensive plays were made
outfield by Leger, Gropp, and Matt
Elliott, while Harrison's quick
glove on third robbed a batter in the
final inning.
"The boys are off to a shaky start,
but with continued practice and
dedication I think this team will
greatly improve their play for the
season," said Coach Cory Bragg.
The Brussels Tigers continued
their winning ways on Friday with
a 7-3 victory at home over the
Goderich Dukes.
The game was scoreless until the
bottom of the second, when the
Tigers counted a single run to take
a one-run lead. Doug Shaw cashed
Doug Conley, who had singled to
lead off the inning with a single to
right.
The Dukes knotted the score in
their half of the third as Dana
Doherty slapped an RIB single.
The home side answered in their
half of the winning scoring five
runs on four hits. The inning was

though the Londesboro bats were
also quiet.
Londesboro broke out first with

hometown team even the score in
the bottom of the inning.
Goderich went ahead with four in
the fourth before the visitors tied in
in their next at-bat, including a

Kelly Vandendool also pitched.
highlighted by a Steve Fritz three-
run shot to left centre.
The Dukes counted one in the
fourth and one in the fifth to make
the score 6-3.
The Tigers added some insurance
in the sixth as Todd Uhrig scored
on a Fritz ground out to second.
For the Tigers Ken Higgins

plate with Conley going two for
two.
Conley started for the Tigers
before being relieved by Uhrig in
