OFF THE WALL By Ashley Gropp Are there angels watching over us? Last week I saw the movie City of Angels, and it got me thinking. The movie essentially suggests that angels are everywhere, watching over all of us and easing us into the next life. I don't know. And that causes me to wonder about many aspects of life. I have never personally experi- enced the feeling of someone look- ing over my shoulder guiding me or protecting me. However, I have heard of others who have. The idea of this movie therefore, made me feel hopeful and yet just a little nervous that life could be completely out of our hands. Everything revolved around fate. Every choice that was made was, it seemed, not made of a person's free will, but rather every decision that was made by a person had already been decided by some higher source. To think that I don't say or do anything by myself is depressing . Are we are all acting out some big play and everything we do and say has already been scripted out? If that's the case, why does it really seem as though we are thinking By Mark Nonkes A couple of months ago I was with some friends at a local restau- rant. We had just finished our meals when the manager told us it was time to leave. There was no reason for him to ask us to leave, there were few other customers and it was not time to close. We paid, left and have not returned since. We are not the only teenagers he did this to; several others have been kicked out because of their age. Although many don't think racism or discrimination is a prob- lem in Canada, it is. This includes discriminating against teens, most noticeably by business owners. Have you ever been followed by a sales clerk because they think you are stealing something? Have you been asked to leave a store without reason? People may be discriminating against you because of your age. This happens too often. Teens have money and they like to spend it. Youth keep the econo- my going. If all teenagers stopped purchasing items many industries would have very little consumer things through? How can it be that we have NO control over our own minds, thoughts and actions? Is it possible that nobody is actually a evil, because they really didn't do the wrong? Could it be that all pain we think we have caused ourselves has actu- ally been inflicted because of someone else? The other side to that is that birth and all miraculous occurrences have happened because of that same being. Every ounce of happi- ness in our lives we would owe to fate. Also it is a reassuring thought to believe that there is somebody right there beside me, watching over my shoulder and protecting me, and waiting until it's time to take me to a better place. I realize that my thoughts were inspired by Hollywood frivolity and by dramatic license. However, they are thoughts in one form or another that I am certain most of us have had from time to time. The issue of life and death is one of mystery. Even the most spiritual must wonder, even the agnostic must consider. Asking the ques- tions doesn't bring me any closer to an answer, but it does get me think- ing and that's always a good thing. base and could go out of business. Many store owners blame youth for shoplifting. Although some teens do shoplift this is a very small portion compared to those who pay. People between the ages of 13 to 19 have a large impact on the econ- omy, particularly in the music industry, where they buy more than any other age group. To be asked to leave for no rea- son is stupid. Not only do the those customers not come back, they tell their friends who may also boycott those stores. This is bad for busi- ness, every customer should be treated with the same respect as anyone of any another age. What can you do to help stop dis- crimination of teenagers? You can voice complaints to the The Better Business Bureau and ask them to investigate or writing letters to local newspapers can raise awareness that teens should be treated with respect like any other customer. A note to businesses, you should not take the teenage customer for granted. Teens make a large contri- bution to the economy and should be treated the same as any other consumer. By Erin Roulston Oprah Winfrey is the most influ- ential woman in the United States of America. If she says "I love this book" millions of copies are pur- chased the next day. If she says "I won't eat this" millions of Ameri- cans will follow her boycott. Oprah's latest endeaver that has milions of Americans following her is "Oprah's Angel Network." Ten months ago Oprah spoke to her viewers about the rising cost of a post secondary education in the U.S. and how many bright but underprivileged young Americans do not get the college that they need to make it big in the real world. Oprah asked her viewers to save up all of their pocket change and donate it to "the world's largest piggy bank" to help send 50 stu- dents, one from each state, to col- lege. In 10 months Oprah's Angel Net- work has earned over $3,500,000 dollars!! In one show about the network I saw a group of Canadians sending all their change to this terrific cause and I thought, "This is great!!! I would just love to send my jar full of cash to help those students... those American students." That's when I thought; Hey!! what about us Canadians? Oprah has to have more than a million Canadian viewers, and Canadian students need to go to college just as much as the next American. Oprah ought to have a Canadian Angel Network! The money could come from Canada, and go to Canada. • So I decided, since nobody else has, I will point this fact out to Oprah and see what she has to say about it. Oprah, from what I hear on the TV show, can only be reached by e-mail. Unfortunately, she is a member of America On-Line (AOL) and her site cannot be accessed by those who are not members of AOL. I am beginning to see a trend. Well you know what I decided then? Who needs Oprah!? We can do it ourselves! I have decided that I want to start a fund to send Cana- dian students to College and Uni- versity. We'll call it Canada's Open Heart Youth Scholarship because the scholarship money will be raised only when Canada opens its hearts to educate its youth (hope- fully it doesn't sound too much like open heart surgery). It won't be the "world's largest piggy bank" but it will be pretty big. I read some- where that if every penny sitting around in Canada was given to the government it would pay off 1/4 of Canada's National Debt (but don't quote me on that). Just imagine how many students could go to uni- versity or college with the assis- tance of a scholarship funded by Canadian pennies? Okay, so I've sold you on my idea, now I need your help. First, I need to know if you think that this is a good idea. Do you think it can fly? Do you think that Canada has it in them to give their petty change to their country's future leaders? Secondly, I need to know what I would do with the money. How does a person like me go about starting a Canada's Open Heart Youth Scholarship? And, finally, I need you to start saving your pocket change. Every penny counts! But do not send it to me! I wouldn't know what to do with it yet! This page is dedicated to teenagers and all of us are very worried about what will happen to us when we graduate. Will I be able to afford university? How much will OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) pay for? Will I need to take a year off to work at McDonalds and save up money? Every time I turn around I hear about a new tuition hike and to tell you the truth, it all really scares me. I know that something like this would really help Canadian Stu- dents. So please help me out and tell me what you think. Send your let- ters to:The North Huron Citizen, Box 429, Blyth, ON, NOM 1H0 Let's show Oprah Winfrey what Canadians are worth. Teens spend too
