Program offers funds for wetlands
Bursaries for 4-11 members
THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 1998. PAGE 21.
Private landowners who have
wetlands on their property and
want to conserve or enhance the
wetland for wildlife habitat may be
eligible for funding assistance -and
technical advice through a new
conservation program, the Wetland
Habitat Fund (WHF).
Doug van Hemessen, WHF
regional representative, based in
London, explains that the fund is
specifically designed to assist
landowners with wetland
conservation and wildlife habitat
improvement projects.
"Wetlands are Ontario's most
diverse and productive habitats.
The vital role of wetlands in the
natural environment is affected by
the activities of private landowners.
The Wetland Habitat Fund can help
people improve the overall health
of the wetland, improving water
quality and wildlife habitat."
Eligible habitat projects may
receive funds for up to 50 per cent
of the total project cost, to a
maximum of $5,000. Van
Hemessen explains that the funds
may be used for projects such as
the creation of vegetative buffers
around the wetland, the
construction of small water-
retention structures and fences to
restrict cattle with the provision of
an alternate water source.
He also points out that the project
is detailed in a Wetland
Conservation Plan developed by
the landowner.
"Response to the program has
been very favourable," said van
Hemessen. "This Spring, the WHF
program is sponsoring 47 projects
across Ontario, providing an
average of $3,600 for each project."
The next deadline for project
applications is July 31, 1998.
Interested landowners within
Huron and Perth Counties are
asked to call Doug van Hemessen
at 519-661-2744 in London, for
program details.
The Wetland Habitat Fund is a
component of the North American
Waterfowl Management Plan. The
Fund is administered in Ontario by
the Ministry of Natural Resources
and Wildlife Habitat Canada.
The Western Fair Association of
London is promoting two Western
Fair 4-H initiatives designed to
give members an opportunity to
showcase the 4-H program.
The Kiwanis Club of Forest City
along with the Western Fair
Association are offering two,
$1,000 bursaries. The purpose of
these awards is to encourage and
recognize excellence in 4-H,

will be selected and each will be
recognized as the "Southwestern"
Ontario 4-H Achiever of the Year".
Members must be between the
age of 16 - 21 years of age as of
Jan. 1, 1998 to apply. Nominees for
the "4-H Achiever of the Year
Award" will be judged on 4-H
projects and activities, community
involvement and extra curricular
activities, an essay and an
interview.
Evaluation Extravaganza is
taking on a new name and focus for
1998. The name is "4-H Regional
Fun Day at The Fair" and the focus
is a "judging workshop". This event
will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19
at Western Fair. Registration
begins at 9 a.m. Leaders will guide
the 4-H members through the
judging workshop.
The purpose of the day is to gain
new skills along with sharpening
