Madill track athletes shine at Huron-Perth
it was a stellar day for F.E Madill
Secondary School track and field
athletes as they brought home the
fifth consecutive Huron-Perth
championship recently.
In capturing all six division titles,
several local teens contributed
strong efforts.
Sjaan Gerth, a former East
Wawanosh Public School student,
Taking the field against Stanley
Twp., May 21, the Hullett Squirts
ball team met strong opponents.
Stanley jumped to a quick lead,
scoring 14 times through three and
a half, before Hullett got on the
shared the junior boys' division
title, earning a first in the 1,500-
metre, 3,000-metre, and the open
2,000-metre steeplechase, shaving
16 seconds off the time for a new
school record.

Midget Boys' triple jump and fifth,
long jump.

Hullett hit for two runs in the
fourth and five in the fifth, but were
unable to further narrow the score.
Michael Benjamins contributed
to the final inning with a homerun.
Andrew Garland placed second
in Midget Boys' shot put; third, dis-
cus and seventh in javelin.
Junior Nathan Garland placed
second in shot put and discus.
In the Senior Boys division,
Adam Carr took the title, having
earned first in the 110-metre; first
in 200-metre and second in javelin.
Midget Girl Jodi Semple cap-
tured third in the 3,000-metre and
fourth in the 400-metre.
Sarah Exel, a junior, earned sev-
enth in the triple jump and long
jump.

Squirts lose to tough Stanley squad
U-15s trounce Elma 15-1
Brussels U-15s got the year off to
a solid start with a 15-1 trouncing
of Elma.
Josh Leis was the only visitor to
sneak by Brussels goalie Mark
Gillis.
Roger Hoag launched five past
the Elma netminder, while Mark
Hunter, Melissa Curtis, Lee Dil-
worth and Nolan Krotz scored two
apiece. Jason Maerz and Daavid
LaDouceur each scored singles.
Coach John Gillis creditted Elma
for a strong effort. ''Our team just
played very well, with everyone
working together."
The next home game is June 1
against Newton at 7 p.m. on the
arena field.
The Blyth Atom 2 team split
their opening soccer action.
On May 12, the squad hosted
Wingham Wildcats for its first
game of the season. Duane Buffin-
ga tallied two and Danny Cullens
notched one in this 8-3 effort.
Buffinga got assists from Darren
and Lauren Bouman.
Netminders were Danny Cullens
and Justin Baarda.
The team completely dominated
Goderich Big V away on May 20,
with Buffinga enjoying an eight-
goal outing. Creditted with assists
on his shots were Charlene
Worsell, Jacob Rouw, Stacy
McLellen, Cullens and Lisa Carter.
His teammates, Cullens, Rouw and
Carter also scored singles for a
final of 11-0. •
Shutting out the home team were
Cullens and Josh deGans.
Reaching for the sky
It was an all-out effort by Blyth Public School student
Courtney Bakker as she takes her best shot at landing a
good one in the long jump event, May 19.
Brussels Pre-Mites
lose season opener
Flying leap
Kyle Gibson had little trouble sailing over the high jump
during Brussels Public School's track and field day on
Wednesday.
It was a tough start for the Brus-
sels- Pre-Mites ball team, May 20,
when Gowanstown came to town
for the season opener.
Though the hard-slugging visi-
tors belted the ball around, the
Brussels squad was able to put a
string of hits together in the third
for six runs.
Andrew Lindsay started the
comeback . Li..tr ,pt with a single,
followed by a ac-base hit from
Dustin LiclIty.
Justin Pipe doubled, sending
Lindsay home before a single from
!3radley (?,tesenberry pushed two
across the te.
Brendan Stretton struck for a
double, earning an RBI when
Christopher Becker made it home.
Marrisa Pipe added a single and
earned an RBI for the sixth run of
the inning.
Singles were slapped by Lindsay
and Justin Pipe in the first; Becker,
Stretton and Cole McLean in the
second and McLean and Lindsay in
the fourth.
Quesenbcrry had three RBIs on
the night.
Though outscored 32-9, the team
showed some good catches and
defensive attempts in•their first out-
ing.
