Stylist opens home business
By Janice Becker
Citizen staff
The sale of the building which
once housed her business has
proven to be a good thing for one
Brussels woman.
When the Gorrie building which
had been home to Darrell's
Harestyling, of which Rhonda
McArter was a partner, was sold
late last year, the hairstylist found a
new arrangement which suited her
well.
After 10 1/2 years of working in
Gorrie, McArter has moved her
business, It's a Shear Thing, to her
Brussels home, May 4.
Located just at the south edge of
town on County Rd. 12, McArter
has a newly renovated shop at the
front of her home.
The bright room houses a single
styling chair, wash basin and
hairdryer.
She offers clients a full range of
services from cuts to sets and
perms. A full line of hair care prod-
ucts is also available.
Attending London and Owen
Sound hair shows helps her keep up
to date on the latest products and
styles for her clients.
Another benefit for McArter in
working from home is the opportu-
nity to be closer to her eight-month
old daughter, Olivia.
Salon hours are Monday and Fri-
day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and
Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sat-
urday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Mr. Les Tervit, chief
administrative officer for the town
of North Perth, was guest speaker
at the 96th annual meeting of the
Huron East District Women's
Institute held recently in Bluevale.
Tervit addressed the theme
"Changes, Choices, Challenges".
He said there are many economic
changes in a global economy. "We
are no longer a resource based
economy, but we must preserve our
land base for food and protect this
vanishing resource," Tervit said.
Rural Canada faces many
challenges, he noted. "We have
become a mobile society living in
dormitory communities. The fastest
growing sector in our economy is
home based business. You now
have many choices, where you do
business, how you do business, etc.
Tourism is big business in Huron
County, as seen in the slogan,
Huron County, Ontario's West
Coast."
Tervit told the members that rural
municipal government is in a state
of turmoil due to restructuring,
amalgamations, and downloading
from the province. Municipal
government now pays for many
services that were once the
responsibility of the province.
There may be more regional
government in the future, but Tervit
feels local municipal governments
are still the most accessible and
responsible to the people.
Leone Foerter thanked him and
expressed the apprcciation of the
district.
Rosette Power from Gateway
Safety Programs spoke to the
members about the drug safety
program being presented in Huron
County schools. Don Shropshall,
Community Services Officer will
be in charge of the educational
program to help today's youth live
drug free. This program is for ages
11 and 12. The cost of the book
used in the program is $9.50 plus
tax.
Anyone wishing to sponsor a
student, or obtain more information
may contact the Goderich OPP.
Public Relations Officer,
Eleanore Grainger, reported on the
District activities for. the year.
There are 111 members in the
District. The volunteer hours came
to a total of 7,120.75.
The District made cash donations
to the Winnipeg flood relief, and to
the ice storm fund in the east.
Grainger said in keeping with the
theme take the challenge and try
something new in the branches and
hopefully next year more reports
will say a successful year with a lot
of fun.
Mrs. James Bridge, Tweedsmuir
curator reported a very successful
Tweedsmuir Tea held to Brussels
recently. All branches report a very
busy year keeping their books up to
date. Program Co-ordinator, Mrs.
George Hislop, reported a year of
varied and interesting programs
with the focus on Safe and Healthy
Communities.
In a lighter vein Leone Foerter
and Pauline Richards of Fordwich
presented a skit "Something New".
One lady had just installed indoor
plumbing and had a most amusing
way of describing the fixtures.
Where do you think she got the
frame for Grandpa's picture?
Board Director Winnifred Mann-,
presented her report of the spring
Federated Women's Institutes of
Ontario board meeting. Upcoming
events are Conference 98 at
BelleVille in July, Guelph Area
convention Oct. 7 and 8 at Maryhill
and District Officers Workshops
Oct. 24 at Bloomingdale.
The Junior Women's Institute
report was given by Marion
Feldskov of Fordwich. The
organization celebrated its 20th
anniversary this year.
On April 18 it was with regret
they decided to disband the
provincial organization. All
branches in the district encourage
the Juniors to carry on in Institute
work, and invite them join any
branch in the district.
Leona Armstrong of Brussels,
reported on the International
Plowing Match to be held north of
Dashwood in 1999. Volunteers are
needed. A general meeting will be
held in Brussels on May 28 of
which everyone is welcome.
