ROY COUSINS
Roy Bean Cousins passed away
on May 3, 1998 at York County
Hospital, Newmarket in his 92nd
year.
He was predeceased by his first
wife Elma Lawrie Phillips in
December 1977.
He leaves to mourn his passing,
wife Reta, son Charles Lawrie and
wife Pieta of London, daughter
Elizabeth Anne (Bette), wife of the
late Ivan Campbell, and son George
Gilbert and wife Emily, and son
John Roy and wife Merle, all of
Brussels. Roy has two sisters living
in Richmond Hill, Dorothy
MItchell and Audrey Moorley.
Grandpa Roy will be fondly
remembered by his several grand-
children and great-grandchildren.
Acting as pallbearers were
Murray Cousins, Randy Cousins,
Laurie Campbell, Tim Cousins,
Douglas Cousins and Kenneth
Cousins. Funeral services were
held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 6
with Rev. Lloyd Brown officating.
Roy and Elma lived in Elora
from 1927 to 1932. There he
started the first dairy to pasteurize
fresh milk for the villagers.
Roy and Elma resided in
Bradford from 1932 until 1939,
where he operated Cousins
Creamery in conjunction with the
Cousins Dairies in Aurora and
Newmarket. He was charter
treasurer of the Bradford Lions
Club and a member of the Simcoe
Masonic Lodge in Bradford.
In the fall of 1939, Roy bought
the Brussels Creamery, and a few
years later bought Stewart's Dairy,
which he amalgamated the
processing of fluid milk products
and manufacturing of butter and ice
cream under the name of "Cousins
Dairy and Creamery". This
continued until mid-1968, when he
sold the business to Huron Food
Products Ltd., which closed out the
operation five years later.
Roy was very active in the
Brussels United Church. He served
28 years as manager of the Brussels
Cemetery, during which time the
burial chapel was built, and the
grounds were enlarged and
improved.
Roy also served on the village
council for several years. Before
being elected reeve, he promised
the ratepayers that his main priority
would be to have a municipal water
system installed. This was done
within two years, during his seven-
year term. He also convinced
Huron County council to replace
the old iron bridge, a steel girder
type bridge, with a new, wider
concrete bridge.
Roy was also active on the
Wingham and District Hospital
board for many years, seven as
board chairman. He also was the
village representative on the
Wingham High School board for a
few years.
In 1946, the Brussels Lions Club
was formed, and Roy was chosen
to be the first president. He is a life
member of St. John's Masonic
Lodge in Brussels, and is also a
32nd degree Mason.
Since moving from Brussels in
1979 Roy has lived in Aurora and
Newmarket.
