Festival seeks support
Deputy Zone Commander Eric
Ross was present at the May
meeting of Branch 420, Blyth.
The first duty of the evening for
Comrade Ross was the presentation
of the Certificate of Excellence
from District "C" of the Royal
Canadian Legion. This certificate
was presented to the Branch as an
Appreciation for Excellency in
promoting Public Relations at
Branch Level and achieving the
Aims and Principles of the Royal
Canadian Legion. Accepting the
certificate on behalf of the Branch
was Mary Lou Stewart, PRO
chairman.
Next was the supervision of
election of 1998-99 Branch
officers. They are President, Bob
Hillis; First Vice, John Stewart;
Second Vice, Crystal Taylor;
treasurer, Colleen Bell; executive,
George Ives, Thelma Johnston and
Alex Blair.

Sometime through the night of
May 5 - 6, building supplies were
stolen from Manning's Building
Centre in Blyth. Police said,
suspects loaded 48 bundles of BP
Roofmaster shingles, tan in colour,
78 - 2 x 8 - 12 feet long and 25 - 3
x 5 - 8 feet long decorative ties.

On April 27, between 7 p.m. and
9 p.m. a pickup truck was damaged
at a party on King Street, Blyth.
Police say beer bottles were thrown
at the truck, damaging the door,
box and hood areas.

Blyth Festival Theatre Fundrais-
ing Co-ordinator Grace Correia and
Artistic Director Anne Chislett
attended the May 4 Blyth council
meeting to ask for continued sup-
port of the theatre.
Chislett told councillors that the
1998 season was one of comedy,
with a lively company.
The first show presented by the
Festival will be May 19.
Work is also being done in The
Garage to provide all day shows for
visitors, allowing them to view 2
p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows
on matinee days.
Council said they would consider
the request for support.

Councillors will participate in
restructuring consultation talks
with the county, June 3 at 7 p.m.

A resolution was passed advising
that council had no objections to
Steve Bearss connecting his drain
on Plan 168, Lots 41 and 42 into
either Gypsy Lane or Westmore-
land Street drains, on the condition
that the eavestroughs not be con-
nected and the village will not be
liable in the event of a backup.

The village outside staff will be
asked to present a written report to
council for each meeting.

Authorization was given for the
placement of an advertisement in
the Blyth Festival souvenir house
program, at a cost of $405 as well
as an ad in the extended Garage
program at $171. The PUC will be
asked to split the cost.

There were no objections to the
Alzheimer Society of Huron Coun-
ty holding their annual Tag Day the
last weekend in June.

In regards to the Cummings
Drain works, Councillor Jeff How-
son agreed to attend the May 4
meeting on behalf of the village as
Councillors Doug Scrimgeour and
Rob Lawrie and Reeve Mason Bai-
ley had previously declared a pecu-
niary interest.
In reference to the village's
involvement with the Cummings
Drain, which is located near the
Threshers Park, a motion was
passed authorizing the road com-
mittee to suggest to the Huron Pio-
neer Threshers and Hobby
Association that the village pur-
chase pipe to close in the open por-
Lion of the drain across the Thresh-
ers Park on the condition that the
association complete the work to
the satisfaction of the village.

ty Road Superintendent Associa-
tion was renewed for a fee of $60.
Network Telethon, $500; Blyth
Minor Softball, $100; Blyth
Festival - Youth Program, $100;
Provincial Police Drug Awareness
Program, $50; Salvation Army Red
Shield Appeal, $50 and the Huron
County Police Cancer Campaign,
$50.
Motions were passed to support
two children to attend the Summer
Camp Program sponsored by CAS,
the Community Supper sponsored
by the Blyth Public School and the
Annual Fishing Derby.
The report from the Track and
Field Chairman, Crystal Taylor
included a motion to donate $75
toward the purchase of T-shirts for
participants at the track and field
meet. A second motion was passed
to pay for meals, entry fee and
busing for the participants to the
meet in Kitchener.
Upcoming Legion events include
joint installation of officers with
the Hensall Branch at Blyth on
May 22 at 8 p.m.; the annual
fishing derby May 31 at Radford's
Pond 10 a.m. to noon; leadership
seminar, May 31, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.;
Clinton Branch and Decoration
Service, June 14 at 2 p.m.
The next meeting will be held
June 4 at 8:30 p.m.
