Rollers, brushes What's the difference?
A.
Where do I start — the ceiling or
the walls? What should I use a
roller or brush?
These are just two of the many
questions you may ask yourself
before you start painting your
home.
Experts know what a challenging
and rewarding experience painting
can be and that's why they've
provided some simple tips to make
your next paint job easier.
It's generally a good idea to paint
a room in the following order:
ceiling, walls, doors, windows,
radiators and baseboards.
For the best results, always take
the time to read the label
instructions carefully. Paint product
improvements and new
developments are constantly being
introduced„so the way you applied
paint yesterday may not be right for
the product you buy today.
Make sure you prepare the area
properly as this will have a major
effect on how long the job will last,
as well as how good it looks.
Remove all furniture, pictures,
plants and loose items to create a
safe and neat work area and then
cover it with drop sheets. And,
make sure you wear proper
clothing including a hat, gloves and
protective eye wear.
It is important to ensure that
steps ladders are properly
positioned. Ladders should be a
foot out for every four feet high.
Never try to overreach — that's
when accidents happen. Paint in
good daylight to avoid any missed
patches. When painting, try to
complete a whole area (wall, door,
etc.) at once, or you will leave
marks owing to different drying
times.
Rollers are ideal for painting
large areas and brushes get right
into corners or edges. For the best
results always, use good quality
brushes and rollers since it directly
effects the quality of the finished
job and the ease with which the
paint is controlled and applied.
When using a brush, dip up to
one-third of the bristles in the paint
to load the brush. The brush should
be held like a pen, leaving a free
wrist to move in both directions.
When painting with latex products
use a synthetic brush; when
painting with alkyd products use a
bristle brush.
Like brushes, there are several
types of rollers to suit different
paint jobs. A roller will cover walls
and ceilings quickly and evenly.
Pour a moderate quantity of paint
into a clean roller tray. To load the
roller, roll it backwards and
forwards in the paint tray, pushing
it up to the top of the slope to
remove excess paint in only one
direction. The roller should rotate
freely and not skid over the surface.
Apply with criss-cross strokes to
the surface, ensuring a smooth start
and finish to each stroke. Hurried
roller movements will cause
"splatter". Blend the edges of the
next application while the paint is
still wet, or a hard edge will show.
When cleaning, latex paint can
be cleaned from hands and tools
with water and alkyd paint can be
cleaned from hands and tools with
paint thinner. When finished, use a
brush spinner to dry your brushes
and rollers.
Used properly, brushes and
rollers will create a surface which
will look great. For answers to any

Build wood fence and help nature
When you shop for materials to
build your new fence or deck, you
probably think about things like
appearance, ease of installation,
and cost. But what about the cost to
the environment of the building
materials that we buy?
Over 80 per cent of Canadians
believe that sustaining the
environment is a major priority.
Many of us do our part by
recycling newspapers, adding extra
insulation in our homes, and
walking to the video store at the
corner instead of driving. But we
also make a major impact on the
environment when we choose
building materials, often without
realizing it.
Wood is a popular and attractive
choice for many outdoor
landscaping projects. Due to
sustainable forestry practices, the
volume of wood in Canada's
productive forests increased by 35
per cent over the last 20 years. Last
year alone, about 700 million
seedlings were planted. That's over
20 trees planted for each Canadian.
But what about that chain-link
fence, those concrete patio stones
or that vinyl lounge chair? How do
we replace the thousands of tons of
ore that went into the manufacture
of steel, or the millions of litres of
petroleum that went into making
plastic components?
The answer is — we can't. Those
resources are finite. Once we
consume them, they are gone
forever. And the manufacturing
process has added to the world's
pollution problems.
A study by the Canadian
Research Alliance examined the
relative environmental impacts of
various building materials. The
results clearly demonstrate that the
manufacture of wood products is
cleaner, less wasteful, and
consumes less energy than the
alternatives.
Life-cycle analysis shows that a
steel wall requires three to six times
more energy to extract,
manufacture and construct than a
wood wall. The steel wall also uses
25 times more water in its
manufacture, and releases three to
six times more carbon dioxide than
wood, and results in five times
more solid waste.
The production of aluminum
generates eight times more
polluting emissions in the air and
300 times more in the water, than
the manufacture of lumber. The
manufacture of aluminum siding
requires five times more energy
than lumber.
So when you go to buy the
materials for that new fence or
deck, consider the alternatives —
and make an informed choice.
