Woman's hobby becomes a growing business
Refreshing drink
Though rainy outside, Sylvia Nonkes took time out of her
busy opening day to water the blooms in her greenhouse.
Spring Breezes Greenhouse opened May 1.
decided to build a 60-foot exten-
sion on the back.
"Opening Spring Breezes Green-
house just kind of happened, " she
says.
Nine weeks after the first plant-
ings, the greenhouse is abloom
with colour. Begonias and petunias
hang from roof supports while
marigolds and portulaca sit on
tables surrounded by ivy.

What began as a personal interest
and hobby has become a springtime
business for Sylvia Nonkes of East
Wawanosh Twp.
Located just west of Blyth, off
Huron County Road 25, Nonkes
opened a greenhouse operation last
Friday.
Having worked in other green-
houses, Nonkes says she really took
an interest in the art of growing
flowers about five years ago when
her youngest child began school.
"I started reading a lot of books
and experimenting with different
plants," she says. "If I saw some-
thing different in a seed book, I
would try it."
Then last November, the oppor-
tunity to purchase a greenhouse
arose and Nonkes took advantage.
Though the structure was actual-
ly too large for personal use,
Nonkes planted her seeds and root-
ed her cuttings in late February.
Realizing she had filled the
greenhouse and would have no
room once the plants were trans-
planted, she and husband Jack
New hybrid grows anywhere

flowers are large and deeply
cupped so the contrasting colours
between the two sides of the petals
produce a novel effect.
The remarkable new hybrid
onion Candy may be grown just
about everywhere. This early-
maturing variety is ready to harvest
while others are just thinking about
making bulbs. Jumbo to colossal
bulbs have a sweet, mild flavour,
large, thick rings and white flesh.
Bulbs are a golden-brown colour
and keep well if cured properly.
Candy matures in 85 days and
stores until February or March.
Amidst the common greenhouse
varieties, Nonkes has incorporated
some unusual plants to add interest.
Some of the more unique are
gazania, african daisy, nasturtium,
cosmos, purple and pink wave and
tapien verbena.
As well as individual postings,
Nonkes has a large selection of
combination baskets with four or
five varieties.
If perennials are the preference,
some nice choices sit outside the
greenhouse, already in the process
of being acclimatized.
For those seeking advice on their
spring selections, Nonkes can usu-
ally supply the answers.
She will also fill a customer's
flower pot with their selection of
plants, for the unique look.
Spring Breezes Greenhouse is
open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.) Monday
through Saturday.
