Summertime easy living deck side
Summertime and the living is easy, particularly deck side.
The deck has become an outdoor parlour for summertime socializing and
family living. Built onto homes, they let you enjoy fresh air, while allowing
the convenience of being close to the amenities. Perched above the lawn
distanced from the grass and shrubs preferred by many insects, adds to the
comfort, providing the enjoyment of being alfresco, without "bugged" by it.
As well it allows a different perspective of the grounds from a highet vantage
point.
Decks can be versatile, too, built to accommodate specific tastes and needs.
They can be built around a pool, above and around a fountain or gazebo, or
worked into pieces of natural landscape.
Top left: the sloping spacious riverside backyard of Todd and Darlene
Wheeler of Brussels allowed them to create not just a deck, but a tiered
showpiece, highlighted by a gazebo. With white wicker furnishings it's a
charming spot for respite or a quiet social occasion, away from sun or drizzle.
Bottom right: Duane and Tammy Gibson of Brussels added a slide to the
second storey deck of their raised bungalow, an entertaining way for sons,
Kyle (top) and Shane to get to backyard fun, quickly.
Bottom left: When Ross and Julie Mitchell of Cranbrook decided to build
their deck, the discovery of a large rock gave them an innovative idea. With
its flat surface, the rock could be used as a table and would be an interesting
conversation piece. Moving it into place was a challenge, but it is definitely
serving its purpose.
