Writer offers some stress fighting ideas
By Erin Roulston
Recently I have been under a lot
of stress. I am always on the go and
I'm so busy that I barely have time
for one of my greatest passions,
writing for this page.
I went on the internet and found
some ways to manage the stress of
everyday life. I hope it helps you as
much as it is helping me.
Being focused is great. Being
passionate about something can be
even better.
But if you're so intense that
you're stressed out and preoccupied
with one aspect of life — grades,
sports, partying — to the exclusion
of everything else, you're missing
out.
Take a look at the list below.
How many items can you check
off?
By Mark Nonkes
The other day, I heard someone
on my bus say using marijuana
wasn't harmful. Did you know that
23 per cent of Grade 8s have used
marijuana? That 40 per cent of
Grade 10 students have tried pot?
That one in six of those in 10th
grade are current users? This was
according to a 1996 poll.
In the short term marijuana
causes:
• problems with short-term
memory and learning
• distorted perception of your
senses
• problems with thinking and
problem solving
• loss of co-ordination
• an increase in one's heart rate,
anxiety and more panic attacks.
Those effects are not as serious
as compared to long-term effects of
marijuana usage. Marijuana can
cause cancer. The smoke marijuana
gives off contains 400 different
chemicals.
Regular users might as well be
eating tar because one joint has
more tar in it than a high-tar
cigarette of the same weight.
Studies show that five joints per
week is equal to smoking a pack of
cigarettes a day.
Marijuana can cause lungs and
airway disorders like cigarette
smokers,
Pot can give users immune
system damage, THC, a main
ingredient in marijuana damages
cells and tissues that help protect
against disease.
Marijuana may cause

reproductive problems. Heavy
usage of pot can affect both the
male and female hormones. With
male users, pot can cause delayed
puberty. In females it is common
for irregular ovulation and
menstrual periods.
The Myth: Marijuana is safe
because it's a plant.
The Fact: Many plants are very
harmful and some toxic to humans.
This includes marijuana.
The Myth: Marijuana wears off in
a couple of hours.
The Fact: Though the initial
feeling wears off, marijuana is
stored in the system. The effect
may be felt for days or even weeks.

You wake up to your alarm
blasting music, sleep deprivation
from your weekend antics has
caught up with you.
You drag yourself out of bed and
hop into the shower only to suffer a
mild heat attack when your body is
hit with freezing cold water. Your
sibling has used all the hot water,
so you have to grin and bear the
icicles forming on your nose.
When done you can't find
anything to wear, miss breakfast
and to top it all off the blow dryer
breaks down halfway through
drying your hair.
Your day at school is just as bad.
You forgot your math homework
and get a test back in chemistry,
which you failed big time.
A day like this could only be a

other community volunteer effort.

same after-school activities as I am.
So, what's next?
To reduce stress, try doing a few
more of the stress-busters above.
Then look at this list again in a few
weeks. See if you're able to check
off more!
The Myth: Marijuana relieves
stress.
The Fact: Marijuana, like all
drugs (including alcohol) merely
postpones dealing with problems
and deadlines.
The Myth: Marijuana is safer
than alcohol.
The Fact: Marijuana contains
very harmful chemicals and should
definitely not be considered safe.
The Myth: Marijuana is safer

The Fact: Horticultural

chemicals are often added.
exactly like this. It was the worst
Monday I've had in a long time.
Why do Mondays always work
out to be the worst day of the
week? Well, so far with all my
Monday mishaps I still haven't
figured out why. I think the best
way to describe a Monday is heard
every Monday morning on FM 96
"Monday Sucks".
I have some tips to keep your
Mondays bearable. Try and smile at
everyone all -day. Say 'Hi' to all
your friends when you see them
walking down the hall and if
anything bad happens to you, chalk
it up to it being a Monday and dokt
dwell on it.
Well, I hope these tips help to
make everyone's Monday better.
But if they don't, just remember
this, tomorrow is another day and
anything that could possibly go
wrong happened Monday.
Here are some great ways of
minimizing stress:
Don't bottle things up, talk
through your frustrations with
someone.
Work off anger constructively.
Violet expression of anger may feel
better at first, but it may leave you
feeling foolish and sorry in the end.
Escape for a while. If you're
stressed, don't just stand there and
take it; get away. Take a walk,
recover your breath and deal with it
when you are more composed.
Give in occasionally. Avoid
being childlike in your convictions.
Being obstinate and defiant in a
quarrel is not as easy on your
system as giving in once in a while.
Take one thing at a time. Instead
of looking at the pile of books or
charts you need to read, approach
each one as its own entity. And if
that is still too overwhelming,
tackle one part of one of the books
or charts a little bit at a time.
Go easy with your criticism. We
are all different; expecting too
much from other people puts stress
not only on you but on- your
relationships. Remember that each
person has their own virtues and
shortcomings, just as you do.
Give the other fellow a break.
Competition is contagious, but so is
co-operation. Don't feel as if you
have to edge out the other person.
When you give someone a break,
you often make things easier for
you in the long run.
All in all, stress is something of
which we will never rid ourselves.
We have no choice but to deal with
it effectively. Using the stress
management skills mentioned in
this article may help, but you have
to find your own way to deal with
the stresses of your everyday life.
Experiment with techniques to
reduce your stress, but find
something that works for you.
Probably the best advice I can
give is don't take yourself too
seriously. If you're in a stressful
situation, ask yourself, "What's the
worst that can happen?" Usually
the answer is nothing that bad, so
relax. You'll feel better. Myths, facts about marijuana
Monday bad way to start a week
