From the Minister's Study `Turn to Christ to fight helplessness, says pastor By James H Carne, Sr. Pastor The Missionary Church, Auburn Helplessness. It's depressing. I have not been inclined to worry in the past, but as I grow older I recognize a tendency to fret over the increasing possibility of helplessness caused by a debilitating stroke, the onset of Alzheimer's, cancer, or blindness. Some years ago, when my father was dying of a combination of cancer, stroke, and a coronary, my natural instinct was to try and minister to him. In addition to all Elizabeth Procter played prelude music on the organ on the third Sunday of Easter at church, as Murray and Wilma Scott handed out the service of worship and greeted worshippers. Rev. Mary Jane Hobden greeted the congregation. Songtime hymns were Faith of Our Fathers and What a Friend We Have in Jesus. The mixed senior choir sang 0 Saviour Take Your Hand in Mine, accompanied by Elizabeth Procter Blyth UCW held its monthly meeting on April 21 with 18 present. Donna Moore and Emily Phillips conducted the devotions with Easter as their theme. Hymns Jesus Christ is Risen Today and For the Beauty of the Earth were sung with Elva Brown at the piano. Scripture Luke 14: 1-6 and several poems were read. Devotions closed with repeating "Go Now In Peace". Shirley Rutledge, co-president, welcomed all. The theme of the worship was "Agents of Hope". Mary Hunter was in charge of the Bible study, continuing with the book of Matthew. The study this month entitled "All in a Day's Work" and a good discussion concluded the study. As I contemplated his helplessness and prayed about my own sense of helplessness in trying to minister to him, my attention was directed to the incident in the Gospel of John, chapter three, where there is re-iterated the Old Testament account of Moses lifting up on a pole the serpent of brass (brass is associated with judgement in the Bible). All that was required of those at the piano. The New Testament reading was taken from Acts 9: 1-20 and the Gospel lesson from John 21: 1-19. The children's story was based on Saul and the sermon was based on the disciples going fishing. Sandra Dorsch and Amy Barnes were in charge of nursery. The new banner was dedicated to the church on behalf of the UCW President Ruth Gordon. The beautiful United Church banner is There is to be a Tupperware party in the church April 28 at 8 p.m. Shirley introduced police officer Don Shropshall of Clinton who spoke on "Scams" and different ways'the crooks have of getting names, bank card numbers and Bell calling cards, etc. helpless, stricken Israelites was that they look toward that symbol of the judgement of their sins and be healed. And, in their dying state, "look" was all that they could do. That's the message that I took to my dad: when one is helpless enough that he can do nothing else, all that he has to do is look to the Saviour. I am praying with great concern these days for two colleagues of mine. One is a pastor in his late 30s who has a malignant tumour in his pelvic and hip bones. The other is a certainly a display of art. Many thanks goes to Mary Hunter for her artistic talent and hard work in putting the banner together with crest and symbols to the quitters for their-fine needlework and of course to the men for their ties and the work to hang the banner. This was a united effort. Stand Up, Stand Up and Jesus, I Have Promised were hymns the congregation sang. Joyce Vincent and Joanne Robinson took up the offering. Never let any stranger in the house, he cautioned, and never give out any money. He then showed a film on "Scam" which was also very interesting. The meeting closed with a delicious lunch served by Brenda and Lori Brooks and Nicole Kerr. retired missionary lady who has acute leukemia and is living from week to week on the strength of regular blood transfusions. I know the seriousness of their conditions and I feel the helplessness that they must feel. As I pray for them, however, I see, standing between them and their diseases, the dying form of One on a cross. He is the embodiment of our judgement and the hope of our healing: " ... He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5). If you are living today with the hopelessness of your sins and the helplessness of your circumstances, take a saving look the Christ of the cross. It's all that one can do. It's all that one must do.
