Council studies county restructuring options By Janice Becker Citizen staff As the struggle to find an accept- able solution for amalgamation continues, Blyth council reviewed options put forth by the county, at the April 21 session. The report from the county detailed costs savings with a one- tier system as well as variations for larger municipalities in a two-tier government. "From this report, the only option which shows a cost savings is one- tier," said Councillor Rob Lawrie. Reeve Mason Bailey said he does see other options and still plans to follow council's previous direction to support two-tier. However, he told council to be Blyth Natasha Haggitt competed at the St. Clair Purple and White Invitational Tae Kwon Do tournament in Sarnia on April 25. She won a silver medal for patterns and a bronze medal for sparing in the White Belt category (ages eight to 10). The kick-a-thon lasted two hours with Natasha raising $356.60 by doing 1,000 kicks each. forewarned that there would be those trying to sell the one-tier sys- tem. "We have to represent the best interests of Blyth people. A dicta- torship may be the most efficient form of government, but what do we leave our children." Bailey told council that in other areas where amalgamation has taken place, with 90 per cent of councillors gone, there has been a cost savings of $500,000, or $8 per person per year. "I am concerned about what we will lose," he added. Councillor Murray Nesbitt sup- ported Bailey for a two-tiered sys- tem saying there are now five people to whom residents can talk. Lawrie agreed, though stated if looking at just dollar savings, com- mon sense would lead to one-tier. He also said the success of a one- tier would depend on how it was run. Councillor Jeff Howson also backed two-tier, but told council they should be prepared if some- Continued from page 1 Vodden of Vodden Consulting is vice-president.
